He wrote in one letter to Mayr that one single piece from Il Paria was worth the whole of his Il Castello di Kenilworth who came six months later. The orchestral prelude, in the first place, must be among the most detailed and satisfying he ever wrote: let those critics who impugn his ability as an orchestral composer open their ears and listen to these introductory pages. The architectural construction of this prelude is interesting, since it illustrates a pattern of building one element over another which, with infinite variation he was to use throughout his career. Initially, both as a supporter for the melody and as a means of carrying the movement forward, he sets up a rhythmic ostinato figure: in this case a pulsating staccato repeated semiquaver figure for the second violins. Above this he sets the melody, given initially to the first violins and the horns, supported by violas and cellos. Soon, as if this texture is not rich and satisfying enough, he goes yet a step further, adding extra weight to the basic pulsating semiquaver figure the violas join the second violins ...
