HCSO Teamwork Leads To Capture Of Burglary Suspect A recent rash of burglaries of homes under construction or vacant in the southeastern Hillsborough County prompted deputies to keep an extra eye on new subdivisions and home sites. The effort paid off in the early morning of March 18, 2010, when deputies spotted a black Dodge pickup in the driveway of an unoccupied home at 5462 Sandy Shell Drive. Deputies watched as a man and a woman moved a refrigerator out of the home and toward the truck. When deputies interrupted the burglary, the suspects ran to the truck and it sped off. The driver, with deputies in vehicles behind him and our Aviation Unit watching from the sky, tore across yards, struck a street sign and an ornamental light post, before it stalled and half-submerged a half-mile away in a retention pond. The driver ran from the truck and tried to hide in the dark swampy area, laying down in the reeds and water. Our helicopter, with its Forward Looking Infrared Radar activated, locked in on the suspect. Sheriffs pilots Ron Waller and Kevin Johnson maneuvered the helicopter directly over the suspect and directed deputies to the suspects vicinity. K9 Deputy Charlie Perdomo was led to the suspect by his dog, Deuce, and the suspect was taken into custody. The female in the truck was hospitalized with injuries. The investigation continues, and an interview with the female is pending.
