The first one being the local tribes - the Thracians, the second one - the Slavs, who gave their language to the modern ethnic Bulgarians and the third - the Bulgars, from whom the ethnonym and the statehood were inherited. The Bulgars were a seminomadic people of obscure ethnicity, who during the 2nd century migrated from Central Asia into the North Caucasian steppe. Between 377 and 453 they took part in the Hunic raids on Central and Western Europe. After Attila's death in 453, and the subsequent disintegration of the Hunnish empire, the Bulgar tribes dispersed mostly to the eastern and southeastern parts of Europe. In the late 7th century, some Bulgar tribes, led by Asparukh and others, led by Kouber, permanently settled in the Balkans, joining the southern Slavic tribes[5]. Art, Tombs & gold treasure 7th International Meeting of Archaeological Film of the Mediterranean Area Athens, 6-11 May 2008 The archaeological research of the Thracian culture started in the 20th century and especially after World War II, mainly on the territory of Southern Bulgaria. As a result of intensive excavation works in the 1960s and 1970s a number of Thracian tombs and sanctuaries were discovered. More significant among them are: the Tomb of Sveshtari, the Tomb of Kazanlak, Tatul, Seuthopolis, Perperikon, the Tomb of Aleksandrovo, Sarmizegetusa, etc. Also a large number of elaborately crafted gold and silver treasure sets from the 5th and 4th century BC were unearthed. In the following decades those were exposed in museums around the world, thus gaining popularity and becoming an emblem of the ancient Thracian culture. Since the year 2000, Bulgarian archaeologist Georgi Kitov has made discoveries in Central Bulgaria which were summarized as "The Valley of the Thracian Kings". On 19 August 2005, some Bulgarian archaeologists announced they had found the first Thracian capital, which was situated near Karlovo in Bulgaria. A lot of polished ceramic artifacts (pieces of roof-tiles and Greek-like vases) were discovered revealing the fortune of the city. The Bulgarian Ministry of Culture declared its support to the excavations. In Dabene, Bulgaria, a cache of more than 15000 gold Thracian artifacts were ...

This is the BBC documentary that Bulgarian MEP's did not want the rest of Europe to see - 'Bulgaria's Abandoned Children'. Bulgarian MEPs tried to stop the screening of this documentary at the EU Parliament but were unsuccessful. What would cause such consternation that this documentary would even be screened at the EU Parliament in the first place? At the time when this documentary was aired, Bulgaria was still bleeding from the scandal of the Bulgarian nurses indicted in Libya for the manslaughter of over 300 babies by infecting them with AIDS. At first the government of Bulgaria did not care about the "Libyan Medics" until they were sentenced to death for their criminal negligence causing the eventual death of over 300 babies. Bulgaria viewed the Libyan medics on death row as an indictment upon the entire Bulgarian medical profession, and therefore began an hysterical campaign to "free the medics". Bulgarians insisted on painting the sentence of the Libyan judges with political colours despite the reasonably good relations between Libya and Bulgaria. To the Bulgarian establishment, the death sentence of the Libyan medics was a "conspiracy against Bulgaria". No attention was paid by the Bulgarian establishment to the plight of the 300 Libyan babies that will soon die due to the medical negligence of the Libyan medics (Bulgarian ...

Melech Mechaya - Bulgar from Odessa

Volga Bulgars (013) Volzhskaya Bolgariya The word Bolgar or Bulgar, on ancient turkic means "rebelled". Some tribes referred to this name which have appeared on the territory of modern Qazaqstan approximately in the fourth century AD Firstly these turkic-speaking tribes were under the protectorate of the Huns (Xiongnu) . But with time the ugrians and bulgars have left their ancient dwellings near the river Volga and Ural mountains & have taken the coasts of the Azov & Black Seas and Tavrida. In the end of 5th century they already occupied lands from borders of the Byzantium empire in a lower reaches of Dunay up to Volga and foothills of Caucasus. The danger for bulgars has come from the east. Turks moving from Altai mountains have conquered a lot of tribes, have found a powerful state-Khaganate and finally have conquered some bulgar tribes in the northern Caucasus. While doing so the conquerors have displaced the avars, all these circumstances gave a chance to khazars and to bolgar-annaguns to amplify on these territories, who lived on east of Azov Sea. In the 7th century the bulgarian lord Kubrat have found his own state, The Great Bolgariya, territory was spreaded from Kuban to Dnepr. In 665 Kubrat dies. His sons didn't listen to fathers wise advice & have separated from each other. The eldest one namely Vatvay stayed on coasts of Don, second son Kotrak have passed the Don and went to avars in Panonia, the 5th went to Italy, the 3rd one stayed between Dnepr and Dunay rivers, but in 679 by ...

Bolghar (Bulgar) Pilgrimage 2008. Tatarstan, Russia / Булгар - родина современных татар и ислама в России It is believed that more than 10000 pilgrims visited Bolghar on 14 June this year. About 19 years ago High Mufti Sheikh-ul-Islam Talgat Tajuddin laid the tradition of the meeting on the Holy land of Bolghar every year in the beginning of June. The ancestors of modern tatars who currently live in the Volga-Ural region of Russia ,the Bolghars, settled in the middle Volga and lower Kama region during the first half of the eighth century. It is believed that Islam spread among them in the ninth century, and there is clear evidence that Islam was recognized as an official religion of the Bolghar Kingdom in 922 CE.

Bulgaria: One Night in Sofia - Part 1 'All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others' - George Orwell, "Animal Farm" The above Orwellian quote is an indictment on the hypocrisy of governments that proclaim the absolute equality of their citizens but give power and privileges to a small elite. The transparency and fairness of a country's legal system is one way of measuring the level of westernisation achieved by its social and political establishment. Take the Borilski case. Martin Borilski was a young 24 year old Bulgarian fourth year law student in Paris. In July 2000 he was murdered after being stabbed 93 times by two Bulgarians that managed to flee France. Despite the damning forensic evidence gathered by the French police and submitted to the Bulgarian court, the alleged Bulgarian murderers were acquitted by the Bulgarian legal system. As it turns out, one of the two Bulgarian defendants is none other than the son of a former senior official of the Bulgarian department of education. Had the criminal proceedings been heard in a French court (or in the court of any other EU member country) the charges would mostly likely have led to a guilty verdict. The result of the Bulgarian trial is a denial of justice in favour of the politically influential elite in Bulgaria. Apparently not all are equal before the law in Bulgaria. In 2008 the Economist wrote of a highly critical EU Commission report on the Bulgarian justice system. Not one of dozens of gangland killings since 2001 has been ...
