BULBS OF HOLLAND A bulb is an underground vertical shoot that has modified leaves (or thickened leaf bases) that are used as food storage organs by a dormant plant. A bulb's leaf bases generally do not support leaves, but contain food reserves to enable the plant to survive adverse conditions. The leaf bases may resemble scales, or they may overlap and surround the center of the bulb as with the onion. A modified stem forms the base of the bulb, and plant growth occurs from this basal plate. Roots emerge from the underside of the base, and new stems and leaves from the upper side. Other types of storage organs (such as corms, rhizomes, and tubers) are sometimes erroneously referred to as bulbs. The correct term for plants that form underground storage organs, including bulbs as well as tubers and corms, is geophyte. Some epiphytic orchids (family Orchidaceae) form above-ground storage organs called pseudobulbs, that superficially resemble bulbs. All plants that form true bulbs are monocotyledons, and include: Onion, garlic, and other alliums, family Alliaceae. Lily, tulip, and many other members of the lily family Liliaceae. Amaryllis, Hippeastrum, Narcissus, and several other members of the amaryllis family Amaryllidaceae. Two groups of Iris species, family Iridaceae: subgenus Xiphium (the "Dutch" irises) and subgenus Hermodactyloides (the miniature "rock garden" irises).

Smashed halogen light bulb still works Don't try this at home! The new GE Edison and Sylvania Daylight Plus light bulbs look and act like ordinary incandescent bulbs, but actually contain a halogen capsule inside -- so they will still work even if the outer glass shell is broken, as I rather dangerously prove in this video. The Sylvania in particular uses an extremely thick outer glass shell which is very difficult to break. By the way, I highly recommend these bulbs. They are brighter than ordinary incandescent bulbs and last three times as long, without any of the disadvantages of compact fluorescent bulbs (slow turn-on and warm-up, radio interference, greenish tint, dangerous mercury contamination when broken, etc.).

Tor*** Projector Review PT 3: Bulbs READ MORE AT This is a review using 2 different bulbs. On another review of mine, someone mentioned replacing the default Philips bulb with a GE MR16. I went to the store and got GE's "Constant Color" bulbs, and the results were worse. So I revisited the comments for my previous review (PT 2) and noticed that the OP mentioned "Reveal" and so I think I got the wrong ones. I'll have to go back to the store and look for "Reveal" MR16 by GE and do another review. Update November 20 2008: I purchased a generic 50 Watt *spot* bulb from eBay and it makes a difference. I don't know the angle of the bulb, however, I can see the darker scenes much better. I have no idea what the extra heat will do to the LCD panel over time, but I guess, eventually, we will find out! ...UPDATE: It's been 3 months since using the 50 watt bulb and as of this writing, there is no noticeable damage...however...I COULD'T SAY THE SAME FOR YOU SO ANYONE ATTEMPTING THIS: DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. Don't come back to me crying that I need to buy you a new Tor*** when yours gets fried for some reason. The only thing you'll get out of me is, "I told you so".
