Altamont This is from a jam in Nelson County VA. In this video I keep looking out the window at my husband who was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) this past April (2008). He had gone out in our back yard with the intention of walking out into the park outside our back gate, but as I looked out, I noticed he was sitting in a chair with his converted ski poles resting beside him. His ALS began in the bulbar area which means that his speech and swallowing were first affected. He can no longer speak or take anything by mouth. He chokes and even has trouble dealing with his saliva. His legs are getting much weaker and walking is tiring and is getting more difficult. He uses a biPAP machine at night for breathing. ALS is a horrible disease with no cure. Music is my chief outlet as I care for my husband. I am so grateful for the many friends I've made through music jams and sessions here in Harrisonburg where I live and in Charlottesville.

To address this need, we are obtaining longitudinal profiles of bulbar impairment in 100 individuals based on a comprehensive instrumentation-based assessment that yield objective measures. Using instrumental approaches to quantify speech-related behaviors is very important in a field that has primarily relied on subjective, auditory-perceptual forms of speech assessment1. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: ALS and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy "I was diagnosed with Bulbar ALS in Dec. 2005. My speech was leaving me. I started Tibetan herbs because a friend had reversed speech problems due to taking them. I still take the herbs but my speech has become impossible to understand. I have a feeding tube now and am gaining weight-yippee! A year ago I started hyperbaric oxygen therapy with. I have not had the tiredness that most ALS patients seem to deal with. I am playing golf,doing yoga and pilates and jog 5k races..I volunteer for Hospice.,Lifehouse and am a National official for USA Track and Field covering the meets at Cal and Stanford and the NCAA Nationals. .I credit this to my oxygen treatments- I started at 5 times a week and now take it 4 times a week...It is enjoyable for me as I can meditate ,read or sleep in the chamber.I am happy doing this as it cannot hurt me and only help me.!!
