Ontario travel: Arrival in Buckhorn in the Kawartha Lakes Summer is a really beautiful time in Ontario. I decided to show my European guests a little bit of Ontarios country charm, so we planned an overnight getaway for July 30 and 31, 2008. Just after lunch on July 30, 2008 we started driving east of the city to the charming country town of Port Hope, just about 100 km east of Toronto. Port Hope is a pretty little town of about 16000, located at the mouth of the Ganaraska River that is a favourite destination of salmon fishermen in the fall. I was there probably 7 or 8 years ago and since then Port Hope has been spruced up considerably. Many new restaurants and boutiques have been opened, and Port Hope has become a favourite getaway destination for city-weary Torontonians. From here we continued on to Cobourg, another attractive country town just about 10 minutes east of Port Hope. With about 18000 residents, Cobourg, Ontarios Feel Good Town, is slightly larger which makes it the largest town in Northumberland County. It features stunning Victoria Hall, a classical building dating back to the 1850s that now houses the municipal offices as well as a concert hall and art gallery. The main street features many cute shops and boutiques. From here we walked towards the waterfront and stopped at the King George Inn, a historic hotel that actually used to be the Cobourg Jail until about 10 years ago. Spring Pole Lathe - Buckhorn Heritage Days Feb 20, 2010.wmv This Spring Pole Lathe demonstration was at the Buckhorn Heritage Days 2010. It is easy to set up and very easy to operate - but much more fun when the audience gets involved. The delight of the children both old and young was my reward for the Day. The Spring Pole dates back to perhaps 900 years ago. In the 1700s the Bodger would set up his Bodger Hovel in a forrest setting among the Beech Wood Trees, cut the trees, shave them into almost round section of wood that was ready to be turned. He would turn these sections of Beech Wood into chair legs for the "Windsor Chair". After he accumulated a good number of turned legs he would travel to the Chair Makers Factory - where they were sold and then assembled into a chair.

Return to Buckhorn - 1971 This Super 8mm movie was shot in July 1971 at Buckhorn Narrows Campground, in Buckhorn, Ontario. The location is in the Kawartha Lakes region of Southern Ontario. Included in this are pictures of Buckhorn Lake, the Gannons Narrows Bridge, the Peterborough Lift Lock, and the tour of the Trent-Severn C*** from a tour boat in Downtown Peterborough, which shows the waterspray near Beavermead the CHEX-TV tower and studio facility; and Trent University where the tour boat turns around, to head back to go through the lift lock, then back to the mooring area downtown in Peterborough. Also included are film segments of my father and his friend fishing for walleye at Buckhorn Lake, plus a site survey we did of what was to had been future places to go and rent a cabin, boat, etc. Unfortunately, my father (the white haired gentleman) died in 1976 and we never did go as a family to that part of Ontario after 1972. This movie was shot on Super 8 film and thus has NO AUDIO on it. It is a historical record of my family and my parents friends from 1971, when we would vacation together. First mooring at Buckhorn lock, Trent-Severn waterway This was the first time we docked on our houseboat trip through the Trent-Severn waterway in Ontario. BuckHorn Trail Tunnel (Finding Bigfoot) This is one end of a tunnel that is on the old rail line now used as a hiking/biking trail. These tunnels are not currently part of the trail, as progress on trail construction has not reached this point yet.(If ever.) It makes this a perfect travel route to remain concealed from view.

Something between wanting to leave high school with a bang, not believing, (or wanting to admit) that high school was actually coming to an end, and a desire to create a movie that defined my class.
