Flawed Beauty - Brazil SEPTEMBER 2010 Brazil, home of sun, sea and catwalks! However as this challenging report shows beneath the glitz and glamour of Brazil's most famous export lies a darker world of racism and segregation. Brazil has the second largest black population on Earth but an obsession with lighter-skinned models is putting darker Brazilians off modelling. Caroline and her friend Aline are aspiring models, eager for a life of glamour. But Aline is one of the only 10 people out of 200 at a modelling convention who would call themselves black. "There are more openings for white models", one model explains. "Brazil is hiding what it thinks is not beautiful enough." District Attorney Deborah Affonso says the problem is economics. Brands don't want people representing them who are "seen as having no spending power". However, a recent 8% increase in the catwalk quota agreement for black models is a step in the right direction to finding a "Brazilian beauty with a real Brazilian face." Brazil's Rising Star As the US and most of the world's countries limp along after the crippling recession, Brazil is off and running with jobs, industry, and resources. Steve Kroft reports.
Black Brazil September 2006 It's a religious festival like no other, featuring skimpy bikinis and non-stop drinking and dancing. But for black Brazilians, the festival of Yemanja is as much about spirituality as partying. "Today the party is for Yemanja, Queen of the Ocean", explains Carlinhos Brown. Candomble, the worship of African Gods, is at the centre of a revival of Afro-Brazilian culture. It aims at recognising the contribution slaves made to modern Brazil and restoring black pride in a city where most black people live in abject poverty.
São Paulo - Brazil São Paulo is the 19th richest city in the world and is expected to be the 13th richest in 2020. According to data of IBGE, its Gross domestic product (GDP) in 2005 was R$ 263177148000.00 (US$ 156280780941.00), equivalent to approximately 2.26% of the Brazilian GDP and 36% of all production of goods and services of the State of São Paulo. One of the biggest financial centres in Brazil and in the world, São Paulo's economy is going through a deep transformation. Once a city with a strong industrial character, São Paulo's economy has become increasingly based on the tertiary sector, focusing on services and businesses for the country. Many ***ysts point to São Paulo as an important global city, even though this assignment can be criticized considering its serious problems of social exclusion and spacial segregation. Although being the most important financial centre of the country, São Paulo's economy also presents a high degree of informality. São Paulo is the business center of the Mercosur economy. Consecrated Acclaimed as a city of business tourism, attracting today's biggest and most important international events, be they in the economic, cultural, scientific or sporting area, it is a metropolis that offers a service infrastructure of the highest efficiency and quality. The city hosts from small meetings to large exhibitions. It holds more than 200 events per day, offering more than 250 thousand square meters of space in pavilions and areas for congresses and fairs ...
Brazil's Sweet Revolution April 2006 In developing a cost-effective alternative to petrol, Brazil has succeeded where much of the industrial world has failed. It now plans to export its ethanol revolution to other countries. Faced with an escalating fuel bill, Brazil's leaders decided to break the country's reliance on oil. "How could we allow ourselves to become dependent on something that is going to finish some day?" questions agricultural minister Roberto Rodrigues. As well as funding research into ethanol production from sugar cane, they encouraged car manufacturers to develop 'flex cars.' These vehicles run on either petrol, ethanol, or a combination of the two. But for ethanol to become a globally accepted fuel, other nations need to produce it. The hope is other countries will soon join Brazil in its energy revolution. Produced by SBS/Dateline Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Race and Racism in Latin America: Brazil - 25 Jul 08 Brazil is considered one of the most diverse countries in the world. But it too suffers from widespread racial discrimination with black Brazilians often finding themselves at the bottom of the social ladder. Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman visited Bahia, the heart of Brazil's black culture.
The Caring Capitalist - Brazil July 2005 Some call it anarchic socialism, some cutting edge capitalism. At Brazilian manufacturer Semco, the workers have sacked the boss, and run the company themselves. At the lavish reception, one of two receptionists meet and greet the great and mighty. But no-one really ever knows which one it will be at any given time. "'We are not sure which one will be there, because they set their own schedule" explains IT worker boss Joao Neto. There are hammocks to help workers think in comfort, and departments can choose their own furniture. Even salaries are set by the employees themselves, and bosses are just as likely to tell you to ask for more money than less. But although it sounds like a workers dream, the rest of the department keeps an eagle eye on lazy employees: "There is peer pressure for bad behaviour. If you're here just to profit from other people's efforts, you're not wanted". The easy going atmosphere has paid dividends -- annual profits at Semco are up to US$ 160m these days, from $ 4m when owner Ricardo Semler took over 25 years ago. Now he has turned his attention to teaching -- without the teachers. Like Semco, pupils at Lumiar primary school in Sao Paulo dictate the rules. Vive La Revolucion? City Of Dreams - Brazil November 2006 Brazilian urban planning guru, Jaime Lerner, has cracked the problem of getting a city to run well. His idea - to put people before cars - has vastly improved residents' quality of life. Lerner has revolutionised transport in his hometown of Curibita, diverting traffic around the centre. Huge pedestrian areas and parks have replaced busy roads and congestion has been tackled with an efficient bus service. As Lerner explains; "If you want to make life better for people, make the cities better." Produced by SBS/Dateline Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Favela Wars - Brazil June 2003 The violence spilling out of Brazil's slums or 'favelas' has made the country's two major cities more dangerous than most war zones. Children in Rio de Janeiro are eight times more likely to die violently than those in the West Bank. "They live on a kill or be killed basis," states anthropologist Luke Dowdney, who has spent five years studying the favelas. "If they don't kill someone when they're told to, they will be killed." Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

HOME Making-Of : Brazil The world's largest wetlands are on the borders of Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. Pant*** is unique for its biodiversity. During the 20th century, humanity drained or otherwise destroyed half the wetlands on the planet, decrying them as unhealthy and converting them into agricultural or building land. In Brazil, herders and sugar cane planters are gradually appropriating these vast wetlands. Throughout the world, the expansion of cities and farmland contradicts the aim of preserving fragile and important environments, such as forests, mangroves and wetlands. www.home-2009.com
