  • "Pass bio safety law", urge scientists Uganda must speed up the passing of a law on bio safety and biotechnology to help scientists in their research to fight hunger and famine. According to Erostus Nsubuga, a biotechnologist breeding bananas and other crops through tissue culture, the lack of this law does not encourage the use of science and technology to improve food varieties that are resistant to pests, diseases and weather changes. The National Biotechnology Safety Bill (2008) was approved and adopted by Uganda's Cabinet in April 2008. But up until now, parliament has not started discussing it, causing fear that its delay could be slowing down the efforts of scientists to get improved crop varieties to the general public. Erostus Nsubuga of Agro-Genetic Technologies Limited says this is one of the reasons why the country is faced with a food crisis. Nsubuga was speaking after receiving this year's vocational award from the Rotary Club of Kololo, for his contribution in developing disease free banana planting material in a laboratory environment, using biotechnology method called tissue culture. He is the founder of Agro-Genetic Technologies Limited, the first and only private company in Uganda to use biotechnology through tissue culture techniques for micro-propagation of different crops on a commercial basis. Nsubuga found AGT in 2001, and is a Swedish citizen born in Uganda. He is an entrepreneur with vast experience in international marketing in Africa, Asia and Europe.
