Cruisin' The NEC with NJT Bi-Levels!! Southbound in a nice jaunt down the NEC is Bombardier Bi-Level Cab #7017 and bi level trailers with ALP-46 #4603 shoving south on the north end. This location is 1/2 mile south of the PORTAL (Hackensack River) Drawbridge in Secaucus, NJ. Just south of this location is the Kearny Connection and Newark Penn Station. The 4603 towards the end has some wicked wheel flats, or what I call "Hammer Time!!". This little spot of mine is located in Secaucus, NJ on Route 7, heading west towards Belleville, NJ, just east of the NJ Turnpike.

NB Acela blows off the Bi-Level at New Brunswick I was paying no attention to that Bi-Level that was stopping, as that Acela was "Sweet Georgia on My Mind" all the way through. He didn't even give any horn, which made me upset at the engineer, but hey, if you're driving a thousand pound TGV-esque loco, you can do whatever the hell you want. Still, it would be nice.

LIRR Bi-levels with GP-38's Smithtown 1991 After the Metra unit didn't work out and the FL-9's were delayed the LIRR used two GP-38's to pull the C-1 bi-level coaches. Usually the 259 &266 were used but the 251 & 269 were able to substitute. The couplers were changed on the engines and Alco FA powerpack #608 was cut up and transformed into #3100 seen on the west end of this train. This car (3100) supplied the HEP power for the coaches. Train seen here is #660 from Hunterpoint Avenue to Port Jefferson. This was the only trainset the LIRR had of these coaches. I believe the westbound trip was as train #603 an early AM run. Once the FL-9's were put into use, the GP-38's were returned back into regular service. Note that the "LONG ISLAND" isn't on the side of these engines yet. They look like they are freshly painted. Video taken August 25, 1991 at Smithtown, NY.

LIRR Bi-levels with Metra E-8 Units 8-19-91 Took this on August 19, 1991 the same day that Hurricane Bob hit Long Island. By the time the train arrived Smithtown the hurricane was gone and the sun was shining. The railroad had it's own problems with delays. East of Smithown in those days was manual block. A train had to remain at Smithtown until the one ahead of it cleared at "BK" Stony Brook. Train #660 with the Metra units is first seen at the west end of Smithtown waiting for train # 658 to leave. Since I know it will be in the station for about fif*** minutes I take a few videos of engine # 605 on train # 657 a westbound that originates out of Smithtown. I then drive over and take some more videos of the Metra E-8 # 516. These old units look like they're built like a tank. Finally they depart east but very slowly as train # 662 arrives and waits it's turn. I take more video of 662's engine # 251. The red recepticle says " For Bilevel Service Only" The LIRR already had this engine along with 259-266-269 ready in the wings ready to haul the bi-level C-1 cars. After finishing up the videos I returned to my car. I turned on the scanner only to hear that train # 660 (Metra bi-levels) was having problems climbing the grade east of Smithtown. I drove over towards St.James and stopped at the Borrella farm stand on Edgewood Ave. I monitor the scanner. Finally the train seems to make it up the grade and gets moving along. I then head over to St.James station where I capture it mid train as it's leaving St. James heading ...

Bi-levels duck under the Pulaski Bridge in Long Island City Here we are on top of the Pulaski drawbridge, which connects Brooklyn to Queens, where we see a Long Island Railroad train of bi-levels duck under the bridge as they depart Long Island City, blow for the crossings at 11th Street and Borden Avenue, and head for Hunterspoint Avenue. I am uncertain as to where this train was going, or the number. Today's consist is DE30AC 418, 7 C-3 bi-level coaches, and DE30AC 410 on the rear. After the train leaves, we watch some cars go over the bridge, which spans Newtown Creek. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome.
