Heritage Collection - Cognac Visetos Line featured with Spring Summer '09 Pieces The quintessential laurel-logoed MCM Cognac Visetos Collection is celebrating its rebirth all the while honouring its iconic past. The history of MCM echoes that of modern travel; up until the early 1970's, international air travel was rare, and luxury voyagers tended to take extended trips via ship or rail - with loads of cases and valises that these protracted holidays or business trips required. The brand's initials 'MCM' (or 1900) symbolise the 'age of travel' as seen on the monogram pattern. The diamonds were inspired by playing cards while the beribboned laured leaves in the logo were meant to symbolise the Greek symbol for victory. MCM's classic, handcrafted pieces have been beloved by tastemakers in the worlds of fashion, sport and entertainment for years. And what the brand came to symbolise- the liberation of travel, top quality, and a fresh and playful take on logo-print design-endures. The German standards of quality and workmanship meant that the suitcases and bags could stand up to thousands of miles while still looking chic, and the monogrammable brass plate upon which the owner's name or initials could be engraved appealed to those with a taste for understated decadence. The design was the ultimate hybrid of contemporary luxury, while echoing the classic accoutrements of opulent travel - whether by train, safari, or air.

The Mystery of Easter.mp4 Just what is Easter? What does the name mean? Have you ever wondered why you believe and practice certain customs? You'll be surprised to find the plain truth about Easter! As children, to most of us the word "Easter" always meant bright, colorful, egg-shaped jelly beans, grass nests, with cute little Walt Disney-type bunnies; and parades. The name didn't bother us, especially. It seemed to rhyme with "yeast," or perhaps have something to do with a direction, like "east." But everyone seemed to figure it was mighty important to pay it some special attention, and being normal people who were inclined to get starry-eyed over brightly lit candy counters and beribboned store windows, it probably seemed like a good idea at the time. But What Does It Have to Do with Christ? Following the crowd is a tremendous pull on little children. But Easter wasn't invented by children, and it's not child's play! Morris Dancing at McNeill's Brewery And now for something completely different (and uniquely Vermont-ish): as a virtual extension of the Marlboro Morris Ale, McNeill's Brewery Pub in Brattleboro was taken over for a subsequent evening of dancing and drinking. Hey, there's no laws against mixing the two, are there? Take a draft line full of hand-crafted ales, a large troupe of men in suspenders (beribboned and heavily bell'd) twirling handkerchiefs and hopping around, some simple accompaniment, and mix well... Iko Iko Performed by Kim Dickens on Treme Here's a charming scene from Treme (HBO), with tipsy, somewhat sad chef Janette (Kim Dickens) dressed as Cinderella, singing Iko Iko on the sidewalk during Mardi Gras, trying to turn her car into a taxicab with a beribboned wand. Great acting, witty scene. Nicely choreographed, the way characters move through. There's a graphically dramatic shot when Janette is silhouetted dancing against the wall. FRENCH GIVEN NAMES IN FARANDOLE Farandole The farandole is an open-chain community dance popular in the County of Nice, France. The farandole bears similarities to the gavotte, jig, and tarantella. The carmagnole of the French Revolution is a derivative. Traditionally led by the abbat-mage holding a beribboned halberd, the dancers hold hands and skip at every beat; strong beats on one foot, alternating left and right, with the other foot in the air, and weak beats with both feet together. In the village of Belvédère, on the occasion of the festival honoring patron Saint Blaise, the most recently-married couple leads the dance. Musically, the dance is in 6/8 time, with a moderate to fast tempo, and played by a flute and drum. Georges Bizet included a farandole in his L'Arlésienne suite. During his time in the 80's metal band "Talas", Billy Sheehan wrote a solo song called "The Farandole". It includes an electric and bass guitar soloing together with drums keeping up the rhythm. In Tchaikovsky Sleeping Beauty's ballet there a farandole in the Second Act in the Fourth Scène, where the dames propose a farandole. Many people use a variety of questionable evidence to argue that the farandole has a history going back to the Middle Ages. While there are descriptions of line and circle dances, and iconography showing people dancing in lines and circles[1], there is no reason to assume that medieval dance was done like the modern folk farandole. Arbeau, the most well-known source for renaissance line and circle ...

Salut les cubains (Agnès Varda. 1963) + subt. esp/eng. Descarga .ar 1963's Salut les cubains is a collaboration with Yves Montand that compiles Varda's photojournalism from Cuba, ten years after the revolution, into a celebratory ode to the island, its people and culture, and the still-very-young socialist state. The images are striking from a historical standpoint, although they don't hint quite yet at the more poetic direction toward which Varda's work will evolve. Her photo-montage style recalls both Soviet revolutionary film and the Cuban documentaries of Santiago Álvarez, whose career was just beginning at this time. Moments are poignant, such as seeing Cuban director Sara Gomez cutting up around the ICAIC studios shortly before her death. But Salut les cubains' dominant impression is one of boundless energy and the nation's great hope in trying to forge a new way of life.

Big Ben II It was then that Denison, who now had QC after his name, turned to the Whitechapel foundry.... George Mears, then the master bellfounder and owner of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, undertook the casting. According to foundry records, Mears originally quoted a price of £2401 for casting the bell, but this was offset to the sum of £1829 by the metal he was able to reclaim from the first bell so that the actual invoice tendered, on 28th May 1858, was in the sum of £572. It took a week To break up the old bell, three furnaces were required to melt the metal, and the mould was heated all day before the actual casting, the first time this had been done in British bell-founding. It took 20 minutes to fill the mould with molten metal, and 20 days for the metal to solidify and cool. After the bell had been tested in every way by Mears, Denison approved it before it left the foundry. Transporting the bell the few miles from the foundry to the Houses of Parliament was a major event. Traffic stopped as the bell, mounted on a trolley drawn by six*** brightly beribboned horses, made its way over London Bridge, along Borough Road, and over Westminster Bridge. The streets had been decorated for the occasion and enthusiastic crowds cheered the bell along the route. The bells of the Great Clock of Westmister rang across London for the first time on 31st May 1859, and Parliament had a special sitting to decide on a suitable name for the great hour bell. During the course of the debate, and ...

Atherstone Ball Game 2012 Atherstone Football takes place every Shrove Tuesday in Long Street -- there are no goals and no teams and the winner is the player holding the ball at the end. It starts at 3pm when the large beribboned ball is thrown from Barclays Bank and finishes at 5 at the sounding of a horn; with up to 2000 people present the street can be tightly packed, especially in the last half-hour when competition is fierce. For more information on this event and other british customs and traditions, visit
