The Bonny Barque the Bergen(Jez Lowe) Recorded at Tegeingl Folk Festival Mold 2008

The Handy Bandy Barque [470-472] (349-350) AKA 'The Campañero' or 'The Campanayro' It took some effort to learn; the notation in Hugill's text is often both erroneous and opaquely presented, probably because performance gave the song a jerky-jaunty feel out of strict meter. Like a piece of jazz music, a "swing" rhythm of sorts has to be read into it. My reading of it has also inevitably regularized the meter. The trouble was worth it--it's a great pumping chantey. It reflects the complaints of sailors in the Saltpetre Trade to the West Coast ports of South America. I'd like to think that "The Campañero" was imagined as a stand-in name for whatever vessel the sailor was currently in!-- the preference for being in a Latin American jail (hoosegow/juzgao) rather than in the barque in question is rather dramatic. Doerflinger is one of the few other collectors to have a version of this, from Capt. Patrick Tayleur. That one is structurally quite similar, though many melody pitches are different. Available recorded versions I have heard have a completely different melody. A sample of that variant can be heard as sung by John Roberts and Jerry Bryant: The pictures (except for the last few, of Cape Horner THE PAMIR) are mine, of various vessels at the Tall Ships event in Boston, July 2009. They are: SAGRES - Lisbon, barque LIBERTAD - Buenos Aires, full-rigged ship CAPITAN MIRANDA - Montevideo, staysail schooner ROSEWAY - Boston, schooner CISNE BRANCO - Rio de Janeiro, full-rigged ship MIRCEA ...

Ravel: Miroirs: III. Une barque sur l'océan (James Chang, Senior Recital 7 of 11) Maurice Ravel Miroirs III. Une barque sur l'océan SPEECH TRANSCRIPT So my next piece is another watery piece. It's called "A Boat on the Ocean," from Mirrors, by Ravel. This is yet another extremely impressionistic piece, in which Ravel succeeds at making the piano sound like, once again, water. This is best experienced with an imagination, so, if you would, it would probably be best if you close your eyes and imagine you're on a boat... well, not THAT boat... a normal boat, not that boat... a normal boat, on the ocean. Now, be warned, that if you feel like falling asleep, or feel seasick, or if you feel like you're about to drown, please open your eyes. Any questions? Please enjoy Ravel's "A Boat on the Ocean." ----------------- James Chang's Personal Senior Recital May 30, 2010, 7 PM, Friday Musicale Auditorium, Jacksonville, FL Video 7 of 11 (haha... 7-11)

32) Maurice Ravel, Miroirs: Une barque sur l'ocean Alita is playing a lovely piece about a little boat that is being rocked about on the rough seas with some calm waters in between. There is quite an echo in the hall which distorts sound quality. One day I hope to record it in a better setting. Hope you enjoy it. Comments, ratings and subscriptions are always appreciated.

Great Big Sea - Barque In The Harbour From a barque in the harbour I went roaming on shore And stepped into a pub where I was oft times before And as I was sitting and enjoying my glass Who chanced to walk in but a young Spanish lass She sat down beside me and kept squeezing my hand Saying 'Sir you're a stranger not long to this land' Will you roam, Jolly Sailor, would you roam along with me To some lonesome spot where nobody can see [Chorus:] 'Don't you leave me Jolly Sailor' were the words she did cry Waving and weeping and wiping her eyes When you reach home in your own Newfoundland Think of the young Spaniard who kept squeezing your hand I quickly consented with her for to roam She lived by herself in a neat little home She was brisk, plump and jolly and her age scare 19 And the name of that maiden I think was Irene One fine summer's morning our ship, she set sail And down by the seashore lovely Irene she came Waving her pocket hankerchief and wiping her eyes 'Don't leave me Jolly Sailor' were the words she did cry [Chorus] I'll give you farewell love on a fine summer's breeze But love don't forget me when you're crossing the sea And when you are married and enjoying your bride Think on the young maiden who lay by your side [Chorus]

US Coast Guard Barque Eagle, Bicentennial of the USA Celebration This is a special video made to show some of the activities the Coast Guard's tall ship Eagle did during our country's bicentennial in 1976. Eagle was a reparation of WWII from Germany, where it had been used as a training vessel. Today it is still used that way, training US Coast Guard cadets every year. (If you can learn to sail one of these, a modern computerized cutter should be much easier!) Background music was provided by The US Coast Guard Band, most of composed by Lewis J. Buckley, the Band's director at that time. Sorry about the "sticky" tape this was made from; the sound will go a bit flat and sharp as it plays.

Tristan Murail : La Barque mystique {1/2} for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano. "La Barque mystique (The Mystical Boat) takes its title from a series of pastels by Odilon Redon. Apart from anecdotal reasons linked to the circumstances surrounding the composition of this piece, the reference to this "symbolist" artist is not fortuitous. The relations between colours are both complex and obvious, since the matched colours are a priori incompatible. The rhythms of the forms include unfocused areas and hazy colours contrasting with incisive features and vividly coloured tints that find their equivalent in the structures and the music's harmonic palette. As they found sensual delight in lacerations and delectable gloominess, painters and poets of the end of the 19th century knew how to sublimate their crises and uncertainties into eternal artistic values. That is without doubt a lesson for us: the pure transposition of the world's sorrows into the aggressiveness of material or the "complexity" of forms does not suffice to create a work of art. In spite of its limited instrumentation, La Barque mystique is truly "orchestrated". It is a miniaturized orchestration that functions like clockwork. The instruments continually change roles and the groupings vary unceasingly. The totality contributes to the edification of global forms. The final effect, as in all clock-like movement, depends upon extreme precision in the execution of the microtonal pitches, the rhythms with their fluctuating tempi, and the timbres."
