Balsa USA 1/3 scale Sopwith Pup R/C with Zenoah This is my first 1/3 scale R/C biplane. It is powered with a Zenoah G-62 and runs a 24 x 8 prop. At this point I had about 12 flights on the plane. This is the first landing from the right. The video was taken at the NCRCC flying club in Ellington, CT. I run a WWI Dawn Patrol event for giant scale aircraft each July. Have been doing so for about 15 years. This Pup is an awesome flyer and is rock solid and predictible in flight.

Maine East High School Balsa Wood Bridge Contest 2010 This was taken for Project Lead The Way Principles of Engineering at Maine East High School. The rules were modeled after the national bridge building contests. The entire project was really entertaining because of so much carnage during testing. Props to Mr. Schultz (our teacher) for getting in on the action and buiding his own bridge. Enjoy! Below are the exact specifications based of the project: Equipment: -20 Balsa Wood Stringer -Wax Paper -Tacky Glue -Straight Pins -Ruler -Razor Knife -Cardboard or corkboard work surface Constraints: 1. The bridge must employ a truss design. 2. Models will be constructed using only the provided materials. 3. Dipping, soaking, or painting to add strength is prohibited. 4. The bridge must span a 250mm gap. 5. The maximum height of the bridge is 100mm. 6. It must be possible to slide a roadway plank along the deck with enough clearance to pass a 20mm tall toy car. The plank will be 2mm thick and 50mm wide. 7. No part of the bridge shall be more than 10mm below the top surface of the roadway deck 8. A load plate 50mm x 50mm will be used to load the structure at the mid span. The roadway deck should be strengthened or reinforced at the load point. 9. There must be an opening in the top of the structure through which the load plate can pass to bear on the roadway deck. A 10mm hole through the roadway will be provided for a load piston to enter.

Wrecks of Balsa Bottom Sound The Axis Harbor at our local pond is a large, shallow bay. Only a small part of it is marked off for the Axis port itself, so the rest of the area is a very popular place to battle. it is also, without question, the single most popular place to sink in our entire pond, earning the nickname of "Balsa Bottom Sound". In our first sortie on July 10, 2010, no less than three ships were sunk within 5 feet of each other in the shallow waters of the Sound. I took my trusty RC Hero from its place of honor aboard HMS Rodney, and spent a few minutes filming the wrecks before retrieving them. In order of appearance: USS Cimarron (WWII oil tanker), IJN Haguro (WWII Heavy Cruiser), SMS Prinz Eugen (WWI Dreadnought Battleship).

Building a Balsa Wood Surf Board Got some choice balsa as long as I could get. Ordered some red foam stringers from US Blanks. Cut the rocker, spot glued the sticks, rough shaped and then knocked it apart to chamber it. Finished it up and rode some waves. 10'5 25 lbs. I call it the Waikiki Cruiser and that's where it's going: to Hawaii. I think it'll be the perfect board for Pops, Paradise, and small Threes. Minimal gentle rocker and 50/50 rails. Saved some scraps from the stringers and sent them over to Juan Rodriguez. "Make me a fin," I said. "Ok", he said. Here's a link to the webpage showing more photos of the build: The music is from the soundtrack to "The Summer of '67" produced by Jay Yerkes and played by the Surf Chasers: Jay on Guitar and Bass with Dale King on Drums.
