Bacterium from Mars "The Guiness Book Of World Records" because of its extraordinary resistance to several extreme conditions. Studies are being conducted to verify the origin of D. radiodurans as many scientists are speculating that it has originated on Mars. It has been classified as a Gram-positive bacterium." The high energy of radioactive waves literally cut apart the double stranded molecule of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). These cuts occur in many places, effectively shattering the genome into many, very small fragments. is able to quickly reassemble the fragments in their correct order and then slice them back together. In contrast, bacteria such as Escherichia coli can only tolerate one or several cuts to the DNA before the radiation damage is either lethal or causes the formation of drastic mutations. U of A team building a better bacterium October 22, 2007 - Edmonton - A group of University of Alberta students have spent the summer working on building a new kind of bacteria - one that might hold some answers to the planet's diminishing supply of fossil fuels. The team members - who call themselves the Buta-nerds - have been working on a way to create an organism that will produce butanol fuel for an annual competition hosted by MIT. The International Genetically Engineered Machine competition invites researchers from all over the world to address the question, "Can simple biological systems be built from standard, interchangeable parts and operated in living cells?"

Metabolism of bacterium[嫌気性バクテリアによる消化] [Metabolism of bacterium under the irradiation of ultraviolet rays] The whole liquid has the nature like one huge molecule, and each atom is changing the neighboring atoms frequently by the energy of temperature, and carbon atom is adapting the electron structure to surroundings environment. A hydrogen ion in the water is able to transfer an exited state. The reaction advances with time passage. And the next reaction takes place to the result of the reaction of before. Then, the first life was born by the chemical evolution in liquid. The life was born as the organization of chain reactions that exist for a long period. This movie is the one that observed the digestion activity of bacterium. The sample was picked out from anaerobic digestion tank in wastewater processing. It was photographed interval of 1 frame per minute and the period is 6 hours by using a digital camera of (×15) through a stereomicroscope (×20). An ultraviolet light was transferred through the sample. The source of light is a fluorescent light lamp for the sterilization. If the light irradiates to human skin several minutes, it gets sunburn. The movie shows that the number of small grains becomes evident during 6 hours. It indicates disgust activity of the bacterium under the irradiation of ultraviolet rays. This environment is similar to that of early earth. The idea that the Brownian motion is related to the birth of first life was inspired by the movie shown in website of .

Neutrophil Chemotaxis Chasing a Bacterium Neutrophils are our body's first line of defense against bacterial infections. These cells can recognize certain chemicals and move to the source of these "chemoattractants" by migrating up the chemical concentration gradient or "toward the smell". The neutrophils were placed in a gradient of fMLP (n formyl methionine- leucine- phenylalanine), a peptide chain produced by some bacteria that is used by the neutrophils to find infecting organisms. The cells charge out like a "posse" after the bad guys. --- Finest quality science clips --- Notice This video is copyright by its respectful owners. Synthetic Biology meets Design-Mr bacterium You Are Not Alone is a collaboration between Synthetic Biology and Design. We were particularly interested in bacteriology and studying its advantages, rather than regarding bacteria only as a pathological problem. Nowadays, we are continuously bombarded with health information, advising us to wash our hands and wipe our work-tops. Killing all germs is synonym of cleanliness. However, the symbiotic relationship between humans and micro-organisms that populate our body is vital to our health. Scientists have been fascinated with the advantages of bacteria, and have used it: to produce bio-fuels, for the bio-remediation technology in oil spills and neutralization of radioactive hazards, the production of plastics, and pest-control solvents. The need to understand bacteria has led to the launch of the Microbiome Project, which is regarded by scientists a breakthrough as important as the Genome project. "Within the body of a healthy adult, microbial cells are estimated to outnumber human cells by a factor of ten to one. These communities, however, remain largely unstudied, leaving almost entirely unknown their influence upon human development, physiology, immunity, and nutrition. To take advantage of recent technological advances and to develop new ones, the NIH Roadmap has initiated the Human Microbiome Project (HMP) with the mission of generating resources enabling comprehensive characterization of the human microbiota and ***ysis of its role in human health and disease ...

Bacterium Walks After Division 1 Newborn bacteria can walk before they crawl: After a bacterium divides into two daughter cells, one of the daughter cells stands up, walks away, and then detaches from the surface. This new 'walking' mechanism, where the bacterium body is upright and perpendicular to the surface, is distinct from the commonly described 'crawling' movement, where a bacterium moves while lying down with its body axis parallel to the surface. Bacterium Eats Away At Titanic Remains Transcript from () BY BRANDON TWICHELL The world's most famous ship could be gone -- sooner than expected. Scientists have discovered a new bacterium that is quickly eating away the Titanic, the so-called "unsinkable ship". But, scientists think the bacterium could actually have useful purposes in society. We're looking at coverage of the deteriorating ship from Discovery Channel, CTV, The Daily Mail, and Flesh and Stone. The new bacterium, named Halomonas titanicae, was found living in a community of other bacteria within rusticles, or icicle-shaped rust deposits found along the Titanic's hull. A scientist on the discovery team explains to CTV how the bacterium works. "They're able to reproduce and interact with all the other species that are there and then continue to extract the iron away from the steel that the Titanic was made of, and so it's going to degrade and break down all of the Titanic and it'll be all gone and recycled." The Discovery Channel takes a look at the bacterium's environment, which is located on the ocean floor in the frigid north Atlantic. "They thrive in extreme environments where we thought no life could survive. Two and a half miles beneath the sea, there's no light or oxygen. It's freezing cold, and the water pressure reaches a bone-crushing 6000 lbs per square inch." Scientists believe the bacterium could be beneficial. The Daily Mail released the researchers' statement of its potential uses. "'We believe H. titanicae plays a ...

Bacterium (2006) Trailer When a handful of friends stumble upon the abandoned building, they come face to face with a biological weapons experiment gone catastrophically wrong. They also confront a maniacal scientist who predicts life on Earth will end in 48 hours if the accelerated bacterial mutation cannot be halted. As the virulent, flesh-hungry contagion spreads from person to person, rendering each host into a pile of infectious ooze, it begins to multiply and increase in size. A covert military force sent in to contain the spread and destroy the organism discovers the extent of the slithering mutation, but by then it's far too late for conventional tactics. Extreme measures are required if anyone is left standing in one solid piece to do battle.
