  • Trivandrum, Alleppey & the backwaters I flew from Delhi to Trivandrum. Here starts my trip in South India. This sequence starts in Trivandrum, with the Indian Coffee House, a helicoidal restaurant (this architectural concept is really cool). - Around the trivandrum temple, people come from all accross Kerala to do a pilgrimage there. A true exotic scene. Around, local food specialities are being sold like snacks, banana chips and coconut oil (for the hairs). - Kovalam beach: a touristic beach resort. 2 sequences: A sunset and a local hindu ceremony (looks like it's coming from the Azteques). - The backwaters: Motorised boat for tourists from Kollam to Alleppey. That day an almost full solar eclipse happened at lunch time. - A canoe boat tour around Alleppey. Really quiet but the c***s around Alleppey have been turned into a house boats garage. - While going for a bird natural sanctuary, a german guitarist and an indian flutist have improvised a jam session. - The next shots were taken in the bus going back from the birds sanctuary. There were many shows like the one being shown. There was also a big flower market in Kottayam. - Last sequence in the public beach of alleppey: a public traditional storytelling. Really picturesque but the speakers were incredibly loud.

Cawleyadventure's travel blog entry: "We arrived in Alleppey or Alappuzha as it has been renamed after British rule and squeezed into one rickshaw for the short journey to Johnsons Nest. There we found the said owner, Johnson who was a bit of a cross between an Indian Rastafarian with red henna dyed hair! His little guest house was pretty basic but we had already decided that it was to be for a night only as we were going to head straight off to Kottayam the next day by local ferry. It was here that we had our first experience of the tropical monsoon. For an hour or so the rain fell so hard that it hurt and everything literally became a lake around you. Fortunately we had already found our way to an internet cafe and so we protected from the weather onslaught. Alleppey is on the coast although the beach is nothing to write home about, we did find a little restaurant and had a nice meal of fish accompanied by a Kingfisher beer! There were three ferries the next morning to Kottayam, 7.30, 9.30 or 11.30. We chose 9.30 to ensure that we made the twp and a half hour trip, arriving around midday. We needed to do this, as via the priest at my Mum's church, who is from this region in Kerala, we had arranged to visit Navajeevan Centre which the church sponsors and supports.   • Kerala Backwaters The Kerala Backwaters are a network of interconnected c***s, rivers, lakes and inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900 km of waterways, and sometimes compared to the American Bayou. In the midst of this landscape there are a number of towns and cities, which serve as the starting and end points of backwater cruises. National Waterway No. 3 from Kollam to Kottapuram, covers a distance of 205 km and runs almost parallel to the coast line of southern Kerala facilitating both cargo movement and backwater tourism. The kettuvallams (Kerala houseboats) in the backwaters are one of the prominent tourist attractions in Kerala. More than 400 kettuvallams ply the backwaters,120 of them in Alappuzha. The kettuvallams were traditionally used as grain barges, to transport the rice harvested in the fertile fields alongside the backwaters. Thatched roof covers over wooden hulls, 100 feet (30 m) in length, provided protection from the elements. At some point in time the boats were used as living quarters by the royalty. Converted to accommodate tourists, the houseboats have become floating cottages having a sleeping area, with western-style toilets, a dining area and a sit out on the deck. Most tourists spend the night on a house boat. Food is cooked on board by the accompanying staff mostly having a flavour of Kerala.
