  • Deuter Futura 42 AC Backpack Review (Part 1of2) The Deuter Futura 42 gives a list of well-thought out features in a sturdy pack at a fraction of the cost of comparable packs from other companies. But don't think for a second that quality has been compromised by the low price. I've literally kicked my Futura around the UK (England,Wales), Southeast Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam), and up and down the east coast of Australia with nary a problem or any sign of damage. The Futura features: - Sturdy top-loading design with adjustable waist belt - Hydration compatible - AirComfort System to prevent "sweaty back syndrome" - 2550 cubic inches (42 liters) of space in the main compartment with a zip divider to separate it into upper and lower compartments - expandable side pockets on either side (for an extra 5 liters/300 cubic inches of storage) with compression straps - mesh pockets on either side with compression straps - 2 top flap pockets - front stash pocket - bottom outer pocket - bottom access to the lower half of the pack's main compartment - small zip pouch on the waist belt - integrated rain cover - Materials: Microrip Nylon & Polytex - weighs 3lbs. 14 oz. (1.75 kg.) - measures 28"x14"x10" (71 x 35.5 x 25.4 cm) - Fits torso lengths 17-21" (43-53 cm) - Retails for approx. US$140 However there were a few small details that I wish I could change - The air comfort system, while nice in summer, is superfluous in cooler months. The extra volume taken up by the system makes the pack a little too large to be taken as a ...

  • REI Lookout Backpack Review (Part 1of3) Oftentimes when shopping we are so focused on certain name brands that we overlook the offerings of other companies. By happy accident I stumbled upon one of REI's excellent backpacks: The Lookout. Extremely well-designed and low-profile, the Lookout fits most of my criteria for the perfect carry-on travel backpack; all for a great price as well. In this two-part series I discuss some of the features of this model (and the current model) of the Lookout with some comparisons to other packs I have reviewed. My review model of the Lookout features: - High-density polyethylene (HDPE) framesheet and a single aluminum stay (current model is also padded with mesh covered foam padding for softer/grippier support) - Panel-Loading design - Main compartment capacity of 40 liters (2441 cubic inches) in the Medium Size Pack (shown in review), 42 liters (2562 cubic inches) in the Large Size Pack - Front pocket with zippered compartment on inner flap - Soft cloth lined top stash pocket for fragile items like sunglasses (current model has larger pocket with bigger opening) - 2 side stretch-cloth/mesh pockets (current model uses regular mesh pockets) - 2 low-profile, expandable side pockets - 2 valuables pockets on the waistbelt (current model has a single, larger, zippered mesh pocket on right side of waist belt) - 2 ports for either right or left-handed hydration pouch use - Bottom compression straps can be used to also strap on gear such as sleeping bag/bedroll/etc. - Low-profile ...

The device is surprisingly detailed to fit a wide range of products. This is a great solution to organize cables and clear up desk clutter. • STM Convoy Backpack Review.wmv "I got the wrong bag." That's what I said to myself when STM sent me their Convoy Backpack to review. Usually backpacks meant specifically for laptops have that geeky, future-tech look - all shiny nylon and zippers. The Convoy totally smashes that image with a rugged OD Green Canvas exterior that looks like you just got back from the front lines. Yet, despite its rough-and-tumble exterior, the STM Convoy offers a variety of well designed features that make this an awesome choice for school or the office. It features: * Easy access, concealed laptop section keeps your notebook protected, safe and secure * Main compartment for books, paperwork, reading materials * Removable Integrated iPod pocket and sternum strap * Organizational panel for cords, drives, pens, etc. * Adjustable suspension system for a comfortable fit over the long haul * Tuck-away waist straps to stabilize the load * Integrated phone pocket on shoulder strap for easy access * Tuck-away rain cover for any unexpected downpour * Front utility pockets for glasses, iPod and cords, drives, etc. * Two versatile side pockets (for newspaper, bottle, umbrella...) * Fits most 15" laptops * main fabric: 14oz water resistant canvas * lining: 210D water resistant nylon * laptop space: 14.6 x 10.2 x 1.2 in 37 x 26 x 3cm * external bag: 19.7 x 13 x 5.9 in 50 x 33 x 15cm * capacity: 2014 cu in 33 litre * weight: 3.70 lbs 1.70 kg * Available at for $76.27 with free shipping. * For further information about The ...

  • Large Frame Backpacks: Kelty Super Tioga Part 3 PART 3 of 3: An external frame pack will serve most backpackers needs. In fact its usually the best choice vs an internal frame pack despite what many biased salesman and outdoor magazines promote. Thanks to such disinformation, the frame pack is often thought of as a old-fashioned and outdated packing option and the shelves of todays outdoor stores reflect that misguided philosophy. Large frame packs, carrying around 5000 cubic inches, are hard to find and usually have to be ordered off the Internet, if you can find one. Thats too bad because the large frame pack is indeed problem solver for extended trips. Nutnfancys reference large frame backpack is the outstanding Kelty Super Tioga, proven on many an expedition into the high country. Sadly its been superceded by subsequent models (however Tiogas are still available under different nomenclatures) but a review of its features in this three part series could help perspective pack buyers to home in on similarly equipped frame packs. And a pack like this is usually necessary to accommodate large amounts of gear needed for 5 day plus trips (unless minimalist gear is carried). It has lots of advantages over an internal frame pack: lashing capability to frame for all kinds of gear, easier to pack, compartmentalization and pockets aid organization and proper weight distribution, pockets with with a flow-thru back will secure long items (like guns, fishing poles, paddles, saws, etc), excellent ventilation behind back, rigidity ...

  • North Face Recon Backpack Review The North Face Recon is one of the staple backpacks seen on school campuses around the country and with good reason. The fact that you see the same design selling year after year is a testament to how well thought-out it is. With it's large capacity, ergonomics, and durable construction, the Recon makes an excellent city bag, particularly if you commute by bicycle. NOTE: Sorry that the video cut out early. I tried uploading several times and it still stops at the same spot. I just wanted to mention that the clasp on the sternum strap also has an integral whistle. A nice little feature that I wish all backpacks had. The North Face Recon features: - 2015 in³ (33 liters) Capacity - 9x13x8 (48 cm x 34.5 cm x 20 cm) - 2 lbs 2 oz (965 g) - Composed of 420D nylon and 1680D Ballistics - Airmesh back panel - Dual stretch side water bottle pockets - Large front mesh drop pocket - Large main compartment with padded laptop sleeve (fits up to 15 laptops) - Hydration compatible - Reflective hits - Small stash pocket with water-resistant zip - Stretch-woven accessory pocket on shoulder strap - Safe-T whistle on sternum strap - Waist Belt (Can be stowed away!!!) (NOT IN THE CURRENT VERSION OF THE RECON) - MSRP: $100.00, available at various retailers for approx. $80-90 Things I would change: - Use an elastic opening for the side mesh pockets instead of a bungee cord drawstring - Add zippers to the interior pockets for better item separation NOTE: If you're looking for the original ...
