Excitable gene regulatory circuit in Bacillus subtilis Supplementary information from the following article "An excitable gene regulatory circuit induces transient cellular differentiation," by Gürol M. Süel, Jordi Garcia-Ojalvo, Louisa M. Liberman & Michael B. Elowitz, published in Nature 440, 545-550(23 March 2006). doi: Supplementary Movie 1 Movie of a B. subtilis microcolony under nutrient limitation conditions, showing PcomK and PcomG activities in blue and red colors, respectively. Simultaneous activation of comK and comG during competence results in a magenta color in the only cell of the microcolony that becomes competent. Supplementary Movie 2 Movie of a B. subtilis microcolony under nutrient limitation conditions, showing PcomG and PcomS activities in red and green colors, respectively. comS is expressed in all cells, but only one becomes competent. The two promoter activities are negatively correlated during competence. Supplementary Movie 3 Movie of a microcolony of FeBy B. subtilis cells incorporating a feedback bypass, under nutrient limitation conditions. PcomG and PcomS activities are shown in red and green colors, respectively. Competence is locked on due to the feedback bypass.

Richard Losick (Harvard) Part 1: Spore Formation in Bacillus Subtilis How do simple cells differentiate, assemble into communities, and cope with change? Losick's seminar addresses these questions in the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus subtilis. Part I is an overview of how B. subtilis makes a spore.

The Bacillus of Immortality found in Siberia In mountain permafrost in Mamontovaya, Yakutia (Siberia), Russian researchers discovered a previously unknown species of bacteria. Mice injected in the body with a solution containing these organisms, were healthier and lived longer than their counterparts. Have the scientists discovered the secrets of immortality? The strange bacillus found in mammoth Mountain in the Siberian Republic of Yakutia is three million years old and appears to have special mechanisms which allow it to stay alive in the most inhospitable temperatures and conditions. It successfully shares at temperatures of five degrees Celsius above zero. The Bacillus, Bacillus F, was injected into mice and increased life expectancy, having a positive impact upon the quality of life indicators of older specimens. The scientists involved in the study suspect that the Bacillus has properties which allow it to survive and create specific immune systems, according to the team leader, lead researcher of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine Academy of Sciences of Russia, Nadezhda Mironovoa. The Bacillus of Immortality found in Siberia In addition, the researchers examined mice that were injected with this Bacillius F, using MRI and found the existence of two types of mediators that were significantly higher: this is glutamate and taurine, and have properties of immune regulation and prolonging life expectancy the cell. In this case, the first mediator is "responsible" for psychic stimulation ...

Bacterial Chromosome: Bacillus subtilis Whole 4.2 million bp genome of Bacillus subtilis is scanned clockwise from the replication origin. Melody is drawn from the profile of genomic GC-content calculated for each 10 kb segment; AT-rich regions are high-pitched and played by soprano while GC-rich regions are low-pitched and played by bass. Each gene is represented by one of six percussion sounds according to a functional classification.

Anthrax and Bacillus anthracis Anthrax is a serious disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, a bacterium that forms spores. Anthrax is a zoonotic disease that is transmissible to humans through the handling or consumption of contaminated animal products.
Galloping Bacteria - Bacillus Species growth - Time lapse Welcome to my bacteria pets -- This video shows growth of a bacillus species growing on a sheep blood agar plate over about 3 days total time. A plate is about 4 inches across and to have bacteria travel that far is unusual. As far as the "pet" aspect goes, I came across these bacteria growing in a environmental bio-film that was on a clinical laboratory drain, close to 15 years ago. I found out that they are able to go dormant and form spores when they dry out. I simply rehydrate them every few years and they grow up again. As pets go they are great as they don't make a lot of noise
Time-Lapse of Bacillus cereus growing An image was taken every five minutes for approximately 87 hours, at room temperature. You can see each morning the heating kicked on and caused moisture to build up on the lid of the petri plate.

Korean Natural Farming - Lacto Bacillus How to capture, cultivate, preserve, and use Lactic Acid Bacteria - IMO - using the techniques of Korean Natural Farming. Using materials readily at home or off of the grocery store shelf I will demonstrate step by step the process. Lactic acid bacteria is an excellent natural digester of organic matter, recycler of nutrients, foul odor arrestor, suppressant of pathogens in the soil and on plant surfaces. It is a naturally occurring, indigenous, non-GMO, organic microbe. There are several sources that describe in writing and pictures how to do the process; however, I have not found one video that shows step by step the "How and Why" of making your own Lacto. Many thanks to the teachers whom I have never met (Master Cho - Cho Global Natural Farming, Mr Gil Carandang of Herbana Farms - Philippines, Mrs. Kim CS Chang and Dr Hoon Park, MD -retired - Hawaii). Their writings have allowed me to learn, use, and now show you all the technique. I hope you enjoy!
