  • Baelvan Darshan: Journey to Lakshmi's place of austerity 7 October 2009. Today the parikrama party crossed the Yamuna by boat to go to one of Vraja's main forest called Baelvan. It is a place known to be the bestower of perfection to austerities. And showing how glorious Vraja mandal and the Vrajavasis (especially the Vraja gopis) are, Lakshmi, the Goddess of Fortune Herself left all her fortune to come and perform austerities in this sacred forest. Why? Because she too wants to enter into the Rasa lila of Sri Krishna. Unfortunately, she does not want to accept the position of being a cowherd girl and make cowdung patties and especially to be married to some other gopa so she can be a secret paramour lover of Krishna. Therefore upto now it is said that she is still performing austerities there. And so today we had darshan of her temple, and the remaining trees in what used to be a forest so abundant of Bael trees. It was a bit of a walk from the Yamuna with lots of happy and friendly honeybees buzzing around to welcome us. (Hey, those who came with us, you know what I mean. :)

  • Buddha Suite Part IVa - Austerities (first half) After Siddhartha realized that neither Kalama nor Uddaka could provide the ultimate answer to overcoming suffering, he resolved seek it on his own. He lived in the forest and practiced extreme austerities such as going without food, not washing, repressing his thoughts and even not breathing. He remained in this state of intense pain and discomfort for approximately five years. "Although tireless persistence was aroused in me, and unmuddled mindfulness established, my body was aroused & uncalm because of the painful exertion." In addition to the physical pains which Siddhartha brought upon himself, he also confronted the fear of dying since he was very weak and there were many dangerous wild animals in the forest. Here is a passage from the Buddhist scripture where the Buddha describes his body at this point: "My body became extremely emaciated. Simply from my eating so little, my limbs became like the jointed segments of vine stems or bamboo stems... My backside became like a camel's hoof... My spine stood out like a string of beads... My ribs jutted out like the jutting rafters of an old, run-down barn... The gleam of my eyes appeared to be sunk deep in my eye sockets like the gleam of water deep in a well." This piece was composed with the 12-tone system developed by Arnold Schoenberg and uses a system of improvisation where a certain rhythmic phrase is repeated and then added to by degrees. The sparseness of the piano introduction and coda, and the constraints of the ...

  • 0341 Section 5, Chapters 47,48 Yoga Vasishta The story of Gadhi continued. Gadhi regains consciousness of himself as Gadhi in the river. He wonders about his experience and concludes that his mind had been playing tricks due to fatigue. He concludes that he'd suffered a hallucination. Gadhi entertains a brahmana guest who tells Gadhi the story of the tribesman who became king. The brahmana tells how he himself had felt polluted and of the long and intense austerities he'd had to undergo in order to purify himself. So Gadhi's hallucination had apparently happened. Gadhi went to the location of his hallucination. Gadhi had a "highly evolved consciousness". Perhaps this means that he could experience his imagination as strongly as physical reality like William Blake. He saw the village where he'd lived as a tribesman and his personal effects. The villagers tell him the story of the tribesman culminating in his suicide. Gadhi travelled to Kira and asked the people there about their king. Apparently the events happened 12 years ago. He sees the king come out of the palace. It is Lord Visnu. Gadhi is puzzled. It seems like a dream. He goes away to perform austerities and Visnu appears to him again. He asks Visnu how his hallucination could actually have happened. Text: Yoga Vasistha Book 1, September 19,20 Video Index ***

  • Romapada Swami Lecture - "Taking Shelter of Krishna" Romapada Swami gave a lecture on taking shelter of Krishna. The verse is Srimad Bhagavatam 7.4.21. The lecture concludes with a very funny story about Srila Prabhupada. TRANSLATION Everyone, including the rulers of the various planets, was extremely distressed because of the severe punishment inflicted upon them by Hiranyakasipu. Fearful and disturbed, unable to find any other shelter, they at last surrendered to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vishnu. PURPORT Lord Krishna says in Bhagavad-gita (5.29): bhoktaram yajna-tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram suhridam sarva-bhutanam jnatva mam santim ricchati "The sages, knowing Me as the ultimate purpose of all sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods and the benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attain peace from the pangs of material miseries." The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, is actually the best friend of everyone. In a condition of distress or misery, one wants to seek shelter of a well-wishing friend. The well-wishing friend of the perfect order is Lord Sri Krishna. Therefore all the inhabitants of the various planets, being unable to find any other shelter, were obliged to seek shelter at the lotus feet of the supreme friend. If from the very beginning we seek shelter of the supreme friend, there will be no cause of danger. It is said that if a dog is swimming in the water and one wants to cross the ocean by catching hold of the dog's tail, certainly he is foolish ...

The Plan I did was: |1045 Caverswall Road -- Dilhorne Park (Bagnall No.2 and Bellerophon) |1151 Dilhorne Park -- Caverswall Road (Meaford No.2) |1300 Caverswall Road -- Dilhorne Park (Whiston and Wimblebury) |1451 Dilhorne Park -- Caverswall Road (Whiston and Wimblebury) |1515 Caverswall ...

  • Bhagavan Das the American Yogi pt 2 (This is the second part of an interview done in December of 2006 posted on youtube as "The Wait For Bhagavan Das is Over") Join Molly Cheshire and Paula Gloria on a journey with a man, regarded as a saint of many austerities who left the US when he was 18 years old after the Kennedy Assassination to find a better way in India. He met many of the greatest holy legends and eventually introduced Richard Alpert, a professor at Harvard who was playing a central role in the turned on 60's and who later as Ram Das wrote the famous book "Be Here Now", an expression he learned from Bhagavan Das
  • Foxfield steam austerities 2010 Chuffin 'eck - three austerities and a string of wagons. Magic.
  • Industrial Steam at Shotton Colliery (North East England) - 1970 Ray Stewart's Cine Footage. The first four minutes are filmed at Shotton Colliery, where the working loco was 0-6-0ST AB 1015/1904; she held the fort alone for many years, right till the pit closed in 1972. The yellow loco is STAGSHAW HL 3513/1927; both she and AB 1015 are now based on the Tanfield Railway at Marley Hill. The green Peckett is 1310/1914. I am not sure of the location of the next section shown, except that it is somewhere in Northumberland. The 0-6-0T 38 was HC 1823/1949, which was at Burradon for much of 1970 (if this date for the film is correct), and the large 'triangle' which features in this sequence could be at Fisher's Lane at Backworth. But some steel side-tipping wagons are also shown, and I don't know whether Burradon had any of these at that time. The third section, quite short, which shows 'Austerities' 68078 and L2, is taken at Widdrington Disposal Point. The final section, which shows 'Austerity' 48, is filmed at the south end of Backworth. Thanks to Colin Mountford and Tim Ruffle for above information.
  • Chhatt Puja or Surya Shashti Chhath puja is performed on Kartik Shukala Shashti, which is the sixth day of the month of Kartik in the Hindu Calendar. This falls typically in the month of October or November. The word chhath denotes the number 6 in Hindi and the festival is celebrated on the sixth day of the Hindu lunar month of Kartik. The word Chhath is also a compound of two words: "Chah" meaning "six stages", and "Hath" refers to the science of Hath Yog (austerity). The word Chhath refers to the process of consciously obtaining the solar energy through six stages involving the methods of Hath Yog. "Hath" here refers to the austerities such as fasting and standing in water. • PRABHUPADA CLASS : THE MOTHER AND FATHER OF GOD {PT 1} PRAYERS OF QUEEN KUNTI Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.8.23 -- Los Angeles, April 15, 1973 Devotee: yatha hrsikesa khalena devaki kamsena ruddhaticiram sucarpita vimocitaham ca sahatmaja vibho tvayaiva nathena muhur vipad-ganat "O Hrsikesa, master of the senses and Lord of lords, You have released Your mother, Devaki, who was long imprisoned and distressed by the envious King Kamsa, and me and my children from a series of constant dangers." Prabhupada: So this is the position of devotees, that Devaki who happens to be the mother of Krsna... She's not ordinary woman. Who can become the mother of the Supreme Personality of Godhead? The most advanced devotee, so that Krsna has agreed to become her son. In his previous life, the husband and wife, they underwent severe austerities, and when Krsna appeared before them and wanted to give them benediction, they wanted a son like God. So where can be another person who is equal to God? That is not possible. God means there is no equal. There is no greater. Asamordhva. That is God. God, there cannot be any competition, that "You are God, I am God, he is God, he is God." No. These are dogs. They are not God. God means without competition: one. God is one. Nobody is great... asamordhva. Nobody is greater than Him. Nobody is equal to Him. Everyone is lower. Ekale isvara krsna ara saba bhrtya. The only master is Krsna, God; and everyone, servant. Never mind. Even if he's Brahma, Visnu or Siva, big, big demigods. And what to ...
