I got a comment on my last video about what happens during a hearing test. Since my major has changed from ASL to audiology, this is stuff I should know. I've done observing with my audiologist over the last week and a half and learned a lot about the practical field of audiology beyond my experience. I'll start off with my history just so it's out there. My dad got hearing aids around 40 because he couldn't understand me. But that's mainly because my consonants are really fast, and his loss started out around the 2000-3000Hz range, and that's where familial, genetic hearing loss starts out if it's a low-level and slowly decreases. He started out not being able to understand me, and now he has a hard time understanding pretty much anything without his HAs. He's 50 now, so it's been about 10 years. About five years ago, I started noticing some problems of my own. Luckily, I was in a school that had small classrooms so I could always be near the teacher and lipread a little. I can't read 100% without voice, but I use the lipreading as a crutch to get me through not understanding all the syllables. When I don't have that visual information, all the syllables run together for me. I can repeat them almost verbatim, but can't separate the words. I was in school for ASL interpreting in Maryville, TN, and started noticing I was having a lot more trouble ...
