Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS10 Audio Problem As you can see by Youtube channel, I like to film rock concerts and share the videos. I started filming a lot of concerts when I got my Lumix DMC-ZS3. My ZS3 started getting old so I figured I'd step up to the new ZS7, which I did. I took my new ZS7 to a concert and got some video and when I watched the videos I had taken I noticed that that there was something terribly different about the audio. The volume was somehow being attenuated when the music would get really loud which made my videos sound crappy. To my knowledge there is no setting to make this attenuation thing go away. I ended up getting a Lumix DMC-ZS10 a few days ago because I like the full HD capabilities, longer zoom & MOS sensor. The video quality is excellent, but as you can see in this video it has the same audio issue as the ZS7. Looks like I'll still be using my ZS3 for concerts unfortunately. I guess I can only hope for a firmware update to resolve the issue with the ZS7 & ZS10.

YouTube hearing test ***ysis I hooked up the optical digital output of my MacBook Pro to a Pro Tools system and ran the signal through an ***yzer. Although the original test may be sound, there is a problem trying to utilize it on YouTube. Due to audio compression, the validity of the test is severely compromised. At around 500Hz, the levels start pumping in amplitude, although very slowly. At around 700Hz the pumping frequency becomes quite noticeable. At 3Khz, we start to see some side band interference introduced and the pumping amplitude is up to a 10dB difference. Just before 9KHz, we see a higher out of band frequency spike that slowly increases in amplitude and decreases in frequency until it is equal in amplitude and frequency at 11KHz. By the time we are at 12KHz, the original tone is completely attenuated and the only remaining sound is the out of band artifact, which by this time is down to about 9KHz. Once we hit 14KHz, even the out of band artifact is fully attenuated. Anyone who hears anything above 14KHz is either hearing things or is listening to residual distortion on your computer / sound card.

Karplus Strong Feedback Spectrum Demo A demonstration of the feedback portion of a Karplus-Strong based electric guitar synthesis model with feedback and distortion. The Karplus-Strong plucked string model is used to synthesize the plucking of the string, to which a non-linear distortion function is applied at an upsampled rate to reduce aliasing. The distorted signal is delayed and attenuated and fed back into the Karplus-Strong loop, simulating the sound from an amplifier coupling to the strings of a guitar. For this video, the feedback attenuation was kept constant, while the feedback delay was varied.
