Child Apneic Episode As this child is sleeping his body is experiencing what is known as an apneic episode. As his airway collapses, oxygen is not able to enter his lungs, causing an increase in carbon dioxide, resulting in a poor sleep pattern. Pediatric apnea is often associated with decreased growth, ADD, ADHD and nocturnal neurosis. Children with this health problem should have a specific pediatric sleep study and be evaluated by an ENT physician and dentist. Insidermedicine In Depth - July 16, 2010 - Infant Death Risk Outside Normal Working Hours Infants born in hospitals outside of regular working hours are at increased risk of dying from intrapartum anoxia, according to research published online ahead of print in the British Medical Journal. Here are some recommendations for neonatal resuscitation, from the American Heart Association: • Meconium-stained, depressed infants should receive tracheal suctioning immediately after birth and before stimulation, presuming the equipment and expertise is available. • Tracheal suctioning is not necessary for babies with meconium-stained fluid who are vigorous. • Establishing effective ventilation is the primary objective in the management of the apneic or bradycardic newborn infant in the delivery room. Researchers out of the University of Cambridge conducted a retrospective cohort study in which they used available data on over one million live births that occurred in Scotland between 1985 and 2004 to determine whether neonatal death rates unrelated to congenital abnormality were influenced by the day of the week or time of day of delivery. The overall neonatal death rate -- defined as death within the first four weeks of life -- was 4.2 per 10000 during the normal workweek of 9 AM to 5 PM Monday to Friday. Outside of those hours, the death rate was 5.6 per 10000, translating to a 30% increased risk. Adjusting for maternal characteristics did not significantly affect these outcomes. The increased death rate during off-hours was due to a 70% increased risk of death from ...

What is sleep apnea? When the tongue collapses the airway for ten seconds or more this is called an apneic event. This does not allow oxygen into the lungs and causes an increase in carbon dioxide. The body perceives this and alerts the patient to awaken themselves and begin breathing again. Dr. Skowronski's knowledge and expertise on the subject of Sleep Apnea will provide the patient with alternative treatment modalities. To hear more about my weight loss, Goto my Facebook page @ http Sleep apnea (or sleep apnoea in British English) is a sleep disorder characterized by abnormal pauses in breathing or instances of abnormally low breathing, during sleep. Each pause in breathing, called an apnea, can last from a few seconds to minutes, and may occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. Similarly, each abnormally low breathing event is called a hypopnea. Sleep apnea is diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called a polysomnogram, or "sleep study". There are three forms of sleep apnea: central (CSA), obstructive (OSA), and complex or mixed sleep apnea (ie, a combination of central and obstructive) constituting 0.4%, 84% and 15% of cases respectively. In CSA, breathing is interrupted by a lack of respiratory effort; in OSA, breathing is interrupted by a physical block to airflow despite respiratory effort, and snoring is common. Regardless of type, an individual with sleep apnea is rarely aware of having difficulty breathing, even upon awakening. Sleep apnea is recognized as a problem by others witnessing the individual ...

EMT Basic National Registry Practical Exam DVD Available - Knightlite Software Becoming and EMT-Basic is no easy task. You spend hours in the classroom, hours of ride-time on the ambulance and time in the ER. The entire experience can be stressful. After the long and demanding journey to obtain your certification the last thing you need is added stress during your practical exam. This video is an example of one of the stations in Knightlite Software's "Ace Your EMT Basic Practical Exam." This 2 DVD set helps EMT-Basic candidates prepare for their National Registry Practical Exam. There is over 3 hours of instruction, and 21 stations based on the National Registry Skill Sheets. Please Note: Except for the O2 & CPR stations, we did not have the O2 flowing, and that is why the bag is not inflated. Shooting several takes for 21 stations over 4 days using real O2 would be quite expensive. We simulated some things, like not actually shooting the gunshot victim. In all of the stations we followed the NR Skill sheets from beginning to end. That was the script. You need only "indicate appropriate O2 therapy." Its not a critical criteria as it would be in the O2 Admin station for instance For More Information Visit: Station List: Disk 1 1) Introduction 2) Airway, Oxygen, and Ventilation 3) Bag-Valve-Mask/Apneic Patient 4) Bleeding Control/Shock Management 5) Cardiac Arrest Management/AED 6) Immobilization Skills/Joint Injury 7) Immobilization Skills/Long Bone Injury 8) Immobilization Skills/Traction Splinting 9) Mouth To Mask With Supplemental O2 ...
