"Antiphonal Circle for Four Trombones" by Brandon Martell Brandon Martell's Sophomore Trombone Recital at Eastman! This is a piece I wrote as the sequel to "Antiphonal Funk for Two Trombones," which was a chart I wrote during my freshman year at Eastman, and performed with my good friend Casey O'Neil. Out of frame are two other trombonists from my quartet, so the listener got four different directional trombones coming at them: Front trombone (Leland), Right Trombone (Matt), Back Trombone (Myself), and Left Trombone (Casey). The one note you keeping hearing played over and over again quickly is actually being played by four people back to back, so the sound "circles" around the audience, hence the title.

"Antiphonal Bells" (2008) Composed by Rodney Money (b. 1978) and the 7th Grade Advanced Music Class This composition was conceived in order to teach the Core Knowledge Elements of Music focusing on counterpoint, rhythm, form, timbre, phrasing, and identify the chords: I, IV, V, and vi. The students where first separated into the four chordal groups and their consequence: I (resolution), IV (exaltation), V (pursuit), and vi (emotion.) The form of the composition is rounded binary or ABA. The A sections call upon the performer to identify his or her chordal Roman numeral and play the appropriate length of note whenever it appears in the music. The A section, or if you prefer the definition of chorus, conjures visions of a rejoicing, exalted angelic hymn singing her praises to the heavens proclaiming that music is the bridge of this world to our home. To conceive the antagonist of the A section, the students were called upon to use their youthful, highly spirited, and collaborated imaginations to compose the B section, or verses. The students were once again split into four more groups. This time each group represented a consort of instrumentation as used in the Renaissance Period (1430-1600): sackbutts (an early trombone), cornettos (an early predecessor to the modern valve trumpet), recorders, and the choir. Each group composed a verse of four measures; two measures for their consort and two for their chordal Roman numeral group. This compositional technique produces a call and answer response that ...

In Paris he forged relationships with such prominent cultural figures as James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, ee cummings, Aaron Copland, Ezra Pound, Igor Stravinsky, Pablo Picasso, Orson Welles, Jean Cocteau, and Gertrude Stein.
