Antimicrobial resistance: World Health Day 2011 World Health Day 2011 is dedicated to antimicrobial resistance, a major threat to patient care and disease control throughout the world. Antimicrobial resistance is a significant obstacle to success in controlling HIV, malaria and tuberculosis—three of the world's leading infectious killers. This serious problem also makes it more difficult to treat hospital-acquired infections, facilitates the emergence of "superbugs" that are resistant to major antibiotics, and creates the need for new, more expensive and more complex treatments. In recent decades, the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance has dramatically accelerated. This situation is related with the increased use of antimicrobials. An estimated half of the antimicrobials employed are used improperly. They are often prescribed to treat other health problems, which don't need antimicrobials, the treatment is not completed as indicated or the quality of the medicines is not adequate. World Health Day 2011 seeks to raise awareness of factors that contribute to antimicrobial resistance, to build commitment to common solutions across diseases, and to encourage the implementation of policies and practices that can prevent and contain antimicrobial resistance.

Antimicrobial MicroCLAVE Neutral Displacement Connector Is your connector adding a protective barrier against bacteria ingress? ICU Medical, providing IV Therapy products which improve patient outcomes. Ionic Silver is impregnated into the MicroCLAVE® design to enhance the barrier against microbial ingress. Safe & Effective Antimicrobial Technology Silver is impregnated into both the split septum silicone seal and internal blunt cannula which provides an even and continuous distribution of silver ions. Silver escapes into all areas surrounding the silicone including the internal fluid path and area between the silicone and housing. The Antimicrobial MicroCLAVE demonstrated: •Significant reduction in bacterial counts for a continued 96-hour use life on the surface of the septum. •Greater than a 4-log kill and a 99.99% reduction rate for Gram positive and Gram negative strains. The Antimicrobial MicroCLAVE was proven effective with four gram positive and two gram negative bacterial strains. •Staphylococcus aureus •Staphylococcus epidermidis •Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus - MRSA •Enterococcus faecalis- VRE •Pseudomonas aeruginosa •Klebsiella pneumoniae
APUA: Antimicrobial Access and Effectiveness Antibiotics are humanity's key defense against disease-causing microbes. The growing prevalence of antibiotic resistance threatens a future where these drugs can no longer cure infections and killer epidemics run rampant. The Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA) has been the leading global non-governmental organization fighting to preserve the effectiveness of antimicrobial drugs since 1981. With over 64 international chapters, we conduct research, education and advocacy programs to control antimicrobial resistance and ensure access to effective antibiotics for current and future generations.

Antimicrobial CLAVE® NeedleFree Connector The new Antimicrobial CLAVE is the only antimicrobial connector with dedicated internal fluid path technology. The same features that make the CLAVE the least likely to transmit bacteria over any other brand, now has the added feature of an antimicrobial additive. CLAVE is the only connector which has been proven to reduce intraluminal catheter colonization in a randomized clinical trial. The reversed, split-septum technology and dedicated internal fluid path are the heart of what makes the CLAVE least likely to transmit bacteria than any other brand. ICU Medical developed the Antimicrobial CLAVE to enhance the dedicated internal fluid path and further reduce the risk of bacterial ingress into the catheter. Ionic silver has been infused into all fluid path contact components which includes the internal cannula and split septum seal. The Antimicrobial CLAVE provides at least a 4-log bacterial kill rate for a continuous 96-hour use life. This method of manufacturing eliminates the risk of the antimicrobial additive scraping or wearing away over time and repeated use. •Even distribution of silver ions. •Continuous 96-hour use life. •Better than a 4-log kill. •Does not scrape or wear off with repeated use. The Antimicrobial CLAVE was proven effective with four gram positive and two gram negative bacterial strains. •Staphylococcus aureus •Staphylococcus epidermidis •Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus - MRSA •Enterococcus faecalis- VRE •Pseudomonas aeruginosa ...

Antimicrobial metabolites from week old saliva This was an experiment to find out why patient was secreting high nitrites\nitrates in saliva. Sample was put in test-tube and treated with ammonia detection reagent. It was left for over a week, in normal to low room temp. Observing under microscope at medium power, first looked like bacteria, but was surprised to see, these were active granules produced by cells in saliva. These produced a very concentrated spot of ammonia on bottom of tube. Reagents for the detection of nitrites were added, and showed negative reaction. This is unusual, because the saliva is almost always positive for this chemical. Do active cellular antimicrobial metabolites in these cells produce ammonia? The test shows this to be true. Do bacteria no longer present, influence cell chemical production? Unknown.

MOSAR - Combating antimicrobial resistance of bacteria in hospitals MOSAR aims to significantly advance our knowledge regarding the control of antimicrobial resistance of bacteria responsible for major and emerging nosocomial diseases in hospitals, which are now spreading into communities. MOSAR will examine the factors determining the dynamics of spread of AMRB within healthcare facilities and the relative efficacity and medicoeconomic impact of control strategies. The resulting new knowledge will be disseminated to caregivers and health policy makers and translated into improved patient care. One of MOSAR's original characteristics is the creation of an international transdisciplinary network bringing together experts recognized in basic laboratory research, hospital epidemiology, clinical medicine, behavioural sciences, quantitative data and mathematical modelling, and health economics.
