  • Antimicrobial metabolites from week old saliva This was an experiment to find out why patient was secreting high nitrites\nitrates in saliva. Sample was put in test-tube and treated with ammonia detection reagent. It was left for over a week, in normal to low room temp. Observing under microscope at medium power, first looked like bacteria, but was surprised to see, these were active granules produced by cells in saliva. These produced a very concentrated spot of ammonia on bottom of tube. Reagents for the detection of nitrites were added, and showed negative reaction. This is unusual, because the saliva is almost always positive for this chemical. Do active cellular antimicrobial metabolites in these cells produce ammonia? The test shows this to be true. Do bacteria no longer present, influence cell chemical production? Unknown.
