3D Medical Animation: Antibody Immune Response This 3D medical animation shows how antibodies stop harmful pathogens from attaching themselves to healthy cells in the blood stream. The animation begins by showing normal red and white blood cells flowing through the blood stream. Next, a single pathogen appears onscreen slowly moving toward its destination on the surface of a cell. The tubular extensions on the pathogen are surface proteins which attach to corresponding surface proteins on a white blood cell, or leukocyte. As the animation continues, more pathogens continue to attach to the white blood cell, rendering it ineffective. During the immune system response, Y-shaped antibodies begin attacking the pathogen, binding to its surface proteins as the pathogen attempts to anchor to the blood cell. The antibodies completely block the pathogen from attaching to the blood cell, "tagging" the pathogen so that one of the immune system's leaner cells, a macrophage, appears onscreen to engulf and digest the pathogen. Antibodies "Antibodies of the immunoglobulin G class are Y-shaped glycoproteins that circulate in the bloodstream. They bind to and inactivate foreign molecules—the antigens—and mark them for destruction. Each IgG molecule consists of two light chains and two heavy chains. The heavy chains have carbohydrates attached. The regions of the antibody that bind to antigens are located at the very tips of the two arms. Each arm of the antibody is composed of four domains. Two are called the variable domains, contributed by the heavy and light chains, and hence called VH and VL. The variable domains are attached to two constant domains, again one each from the heavy and light chains, and hence called CH and CL. Variable and constant domains share a similar structure, called the Ig fold. Each domain consists of a pair of beta sheets, one with three strands and one with five. A single covalent disulfide bridge holds the two sheets together, which results in a rigid and very stable domain. As their name implies, the variable domains vary in amino acid sequence from one antibody molecule to another, thus providing the vast diversity in structure required by the immune system. The antigen-binding site in the variable domains is composed of hypervariable loops that are especially susceptible to sequence variations. Sequence variations in the hypervariable loops are responsible for the specificity of antibodies to particular antigens. Antigens bind to the tip of each antibody arm, generally two ...

Antibodies Against Alzheimers Disease A vaccine-based approach could be an effective therapy for people with mild or moderate form of Alzheimers disease. The medication used for this therapy will be tested at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute, participating in an international effort to find out more about the potential of this treatment. Most current therapies for Alzheimers treat the symptoms associated with it and not the disease itself. The goal with this clinical trial is to explore if this investigational drug can help control the progression of Alzheimers by eliminating the protein that cause damage to the brain .CARING.DISCOVERING.TEACHING. *** The Douglas is a world-class institute located in Montreal (Canada), affiliated with McGill University and the World Health Organization, which treats people suffering from mental illness and offers them hope and cure. Its teams of specialists and researchers continually advance scientific knowledge, integrate it into patient care, and share it with the community to increase awareness and thereby eliminate stigma around mental illness.
