~ Beets ~ Nutrition & Wellness Tipc Beets are root vegetables that are common in many cuisines around the world. In addition to the root, the stems can be eaten, too and in Europe, much of the table sugar used comes from beets. Beets are a great source of folate and the red varieties also have the antioxidant anthocyanin. Just remember, though, that eating a lot of red beets can turn your urine pink.
Photomorphogensis: anthocyanin and light responses in mustard seedlings BS1003 practical This practical class shows the control of anthocyanin production in mustard seedlings following growth under different light conditions. For the practical schedule and instructions, see the sidebar 'teaching' on the left-hand side of (on Blackboard for UoL students). It is part of the University of Leicester course BS1003 - Cell and developmental biology. Phytochrome exists in two forms, Pr and Pfr. The far red-absorbing form, Pfr, is biologically active and induces gene expression to produce the red-pink anthocyanin pigment. Treatement with white light, or five minutes of red light, produces the anthocyanin response by converting Pr to Pfr. Treatment with red light followed by far red light reverses the response by converting the active Pfr back to Pr.

How to make a pH indicator using red cabbage The pigment that is released after a red cabbage is boiled is called anthocyanin. Anthocyanin is a good pH indicator because when mixed in solution with acid it turns pink and when mixed with a base it turns a blue and the stronger the base a lighter yellow, while staying the same color when mixed in a solution with a neutral pH. Shabnam Jabbari - Botany 2010 Flower Color Variability and Mixed Mating in the Protandrous Herb Saponaria officinalis (L. Caryophyllaceae). Co-author: Sandra L. Davis The perennial herb Saponaria officinalis is protandrous; within a flower, anthers dehisce before stigmas are receptive. Theory predicts this type of breeding system may have evolved to prevent self-fertilization and inbreeding depression. However, overlap between gender stages may allow for self-fertilization, resulting in a mixed mating system. The high frequency of mixed mating systems found in nature is intriguing, as theoretical models have predict plants will evolve to complete outcrossing or selfing. However, a mixed mating system in which selfing is delayed until opportunities for outcrossing have passed, provides the genetic benefits of outcrossing and the reproductive assurance of selfing. Prior studies have shown that pollinators are important in the reproduction of S. officinalis but flowers may still self-fertilize. Flowers of S. officinalis vary from white to pink; corresponding with the gender development of the flower. Color variability may affect pollinator visitation and preference. Therefore, to understand the evolution of mixed mating in S. officinalis, it is necessary to understand the interaction between these variables. Flower color may be a genetically determined trait and differ between populations. In addition, it is believed that sun exposure has an effect on the concentration of the anthocyanin. In this study ...

TLE Project: Devil's Cake Created for the Project of Elay Danting's Group in TLE. Devil's food cake is a moist, airy, rich coffee chocolate layer cake. It is considered a counterpart to the white or yellow angel food cake. Due to differing recipes and changing ingredient availability over the course of the twentieth century, it is difficult to precisely quantify what distinguishes devil's food from the more standard chocolate cake. The cake is usually paired with a rich chocolate frosting. Devil's food cake is generally more moist and airy than other chocolate cakes, and often uses cocoa as opposed to chocolate for the flavor as well as coffee. The lack of melted chocolate and the addition of coffee is typically what distinguishes a 'devil's food cake' from a chocolate cake, though some recipes call for all, resulting in an even richer chocolate flavor. The use of hot, or boiling water as the cake's main liquid, rather than milk, is also a common difference. Devil's food cake is sometimes distinguished from other substances by the use of additional baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) which raises the pH level and makes the cake a deeper and darker mahogany color. Devil's food cake incorporates butter (or a substitute), egg whites, flour (while some chocolate cakes are flourless) and less egg than other chocolate cakes. Devil's food cake was introduced in the United States in the early 20th century with the recipe in print as early as 1905. A similar cake, the red velvet cake, is closely linked to ...

Container strawberry growing Eye Care: The primary reasons for almost all the problems of eyes are free radicals and deficiency of certain nutrients. With the growing age and lack of these protective nutrients, the harmful oxidants or free radicals cast heavy damage on our eyes, such as drying up of eyes, degeneration of optical nerves, Macular degeneration, vision defects and make them prone to infections too. The anti oxidants such as vitamin-C, Flavonoids, Phenolic Phytochemicals and Elagic Acid, present in strawberries can help avoid this situation to a great extent. One more factor is ocular pressure, ie the pressure of the eyes. Any disturbance in it is also harmful for the eyes. Here too, strawberries are helpful as they contain potassium, which help maintain right pressure.Arthritis and Gout: The degeneration of muscles and tissues, drying up of the fluid which help mobility of the joints and accumulation of toxic substances and acids (such as uric acid) in the body are some of the ill effects of free radicals present in our body, which are primarily responsible for Arthritis and Gout. Strawberries, with their team of anti oxidants and detoxifiers, can effectively help push away such health hazards forever. It is a famous saying in India that a serving of any fruit a day will remove the rust from the joints. It is very true for strawberries. Cancer: Vitamin-C, Folate and Anthocyanin, Quercetin and Kaempferol (few of the many Flavonoids in strawberries which possess excellent anti oxidant and ...

Medox - Anthocyanins Polyphenols From www.medox- Want the most concentrated source of anthocyanins on the planet?? Medox® is a natural, pure anthocyanin product extracted from bilberries and black currants, developed and produced in Norway by Medpalett AS. Anthocyanins are destroyed in the extraction process. An intact molecule is essential in order for an anthocyanin to be absorbed and to be used by the cells. Unlike other extracts, Medox®Optimal is produced by a chromatographic process that ensures that the anthocyanin molecule is intact and thus acts effectively in the body. What are anthocyanins? Anthocyanins are natural occurring pigment molecules that give plants their blue color, while simultaneously acting as the plants' own immune defense system. International clinical research has shown those anthocyanins are extremely valuable in promoting health, and are among the most effective antioxidants known.

Its produced with acai berries and evidently it has more antioxidants than some other food known to mankind. The Acai berry is getting very popular among superfoods, being a supporting supplementation that works very well for antiaging. This berry is growing in the Amazon woods and is high with minerals and vitamins that benefit your health and well-being. It carries 3 times more polyphenol compared to wine and 4.6 times more anthocyanin than blueberries, and a content called cyanidin 3-rutinoside (C3R) that is obtained in the berry offers a larger anti-oxidant effect than carotenoid. So, Acai berry is one of the most strong antioxidant fruits you can perhaps see in the nature. Before you go away to buy acai berry supreme or any different acai berry product, you truly want to acknowledge that many acai products are rather reduced. Its important to recognize that raw acai berry is thicker than water and many of these acai berry products dont contain enough acai berry fruit to even make any type of nutritionary difference at all. And on the other side, other acai products have so much other stuff added, its not funny anymore, so keep hands off from bad products, they wont make any good for you. While many of these acai berry juices taste distasteful (probably there was something added to the product) and several could taste like some cool-aid (probably watered down ...

Autumn Colors the reason the for the season For our video, we sought out to explain how nutrient translocation occurs. Nutrient translocation explains why trees change colors throughout the year. During the summer, the leaves contain a pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll allows photosynthesis to occur, and is also the reason why the leaves are green. Once autumn comes, the green leaves begin to turn yellow and orange. This occurs because the chlorophyll in the leaves begins to get degraded and in its place two accessory pigments emerge to protect the leaves from oxidation. The two pigments are anthocyanin and carotonin and give the leaves a red or brown color. These pigments remain in the leaves until the leaves are ready to fall off of the tree. When the leaves fall from the trees, the nutrients that were stored in the leaves travel down to the root of the tree, where they are stored during the winter. In the springtime, the nutrients travel back up the root, and green leaves reemerge. A video on a the cause of the change in leafs during the fall. By Michael Sullivan, Brett M. Warner, and Nicholas Hood.

Benefits of Freeze Dried Acai Berry from Avid Pure Acai More info about Freeze-Dried Acai Berry: Besides of being a perfect source of nutrition and healthy fatty acids, Acai contains a high level of antioxidants which may help to increase energy levels and stamina. Up to date, only freeze-dried Acai powder showed an extremely high antioxidant level of 1027 micromol TE of any other food tested by ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) established by the USDA. In a number of studies done including Dr. Schauss in 2006, the ORAC value for this freeze-dried powder was significantly higher than when other methods of drying the fruit were tested. For example, spray-dried Acai has only an ORAC value of 65. Interestingly, the study done by Dr. Lichtenthaler found out that only 10% of Acais high antioxidant effects could be explained by its known antioxidants, such as anthocyanin. This suggests that there are other unidentified antioxidants present in the Acai berry which contribute to this high antioxidant activity. In 2006, a study performed at the University of Florida showed that Acai fractions containing polyphenolics could reduce proliferation of leukemia cells in a laboratory setting. Further researches need to be done and this was not intended to conclude any findings to prevent leukemia in humans. In addition, Acai contains a high level of dietary fiber, rich in amino acids. Its protein content is comparable to an egg, and its plant protein is easily absorbed by the body. Acai is also a great source of ...

Callicarpa Bodinieri var. giraldii Aronia melanocarpa Aronia melanocarpa (black chokeberry) has attracted scientific interest due to its deep purple, almost black pigmentation that arises from dense contents of phenolic phytochemicals, especially anthocyanins. Total anthocyanin content in chokeberries is 1480 mg per 100 g of fresh berries, and proanthocyanidin concentration is 664 mg per 100 g (Wu et al. 2004, 2006). Both values are among the highest measured in plants to date. The plant produces these pigments mainly in the skin of the berries to protect the pulp and seeds from constant exposure to ultraviolet radiation. By absorbing UV rays in the blue-purple spectrum, pigments filter intense sunlight and thereby have a role assuring regeneration of the species. Brightly colorful pigmentation also attracts birds and animals to consume the fruit and disperse the seeds in their droppings. Anthocyanins not only contribute toward chokeberry's astringent property (that would deter pests and infections) but also give Aronia melanocarpa extraordinary antioxidant strength that combats oxidative stress in the fruit during photosynthesis.
