Angler Fish Carved From Snow This is the 8 foot tall angler fish my brother-in-law Wade and I carved for the 2009 Ely Winter Festival in Ely Minnesota. Don't get too close- this guy's got a mean bite! The main feature of the festival is the Snow Sculpture Symposium, in which over a dozen teams of professional snow carvers are invited to create snow sculptures from the 8 and 12 foot blocks of snow which the city made in advance for us. It's just up to us to find the shape inside and carve away the excess snow! We carve for three days straight, ending just as the Winter Festival is beginning and festival goers start arriving in Ely. Wade and I decided to carve an angler fish this year, and we were quite happy with how it turned out! Really it is sort of a mix of an angler fish and a frogfish. We titled our sculpture "Allure." The blue things near the jaw are (unlit) ice candle lanterns, melted out down the center for a candle to sit. A local couple spends all winter creating these to light the sculptures at night. This night was too breezy for the candles to stay lit, though. :(

Angler Fish - Fauna Clips Members of the genus Lophius, also sometimes called monkfish, goosefish, fishing-frogs, frog-fish, and sea-devils, are well known off the coasts of Europe generally, the grotesque shape of its body and its singular habits having attracted the attention of naturalists of all ages.
