Phronima sedentaria An amphipod that kills tunicates and rides around in their casings.

Attack of the Amphipods - Here is a video of a Tridacna derasa clam being attacked by several amphipod crustaceans. The "pods" climb onto the shell of the clam and bit small pieces out of its mantle tissue. The tissue then retracts and secretes a small amount of slime, and although the clam is clearly irritated, it is still healthy and continues to grow at a fast pace.

Reef Amphipods: Great Grazers Among the more beneficial marine invertebrates we can introduce to our reef aquarium tanks, ipsf's Reef Amphipods are prodigious grazers of microalgae and macroalgae. They help control the growth of algae that might otherwise reach nuisance levels. Reef Amphipods are beneficial in the main tank as well as the refugium. They breed easily in captivity but will not overpopulate your system, being limited by space and available food. Observe them in a shallow bowl to see females with eggs attached to their abdomens. These eggs develop into swimming larvae which are released directly into the water column in the aquarium. Many types of fishes feed on Reef Amphipods, including clownfishes, sea horses and angelfishes. Please use only captive-bred organisms in your reef aquarium. More amphipods! Another amphipod video, practicing a close-up technique I have come up with They sure are facinating to watch, scurrying around like ants, interacting with each other like they do!

Amphipods in my refugium A video of amphipods in my refugium, aren't they cute? I love how they interact with each other, think it's facinating to watch!

Phronima! Phronima (pram bug amphipod) are some of the weirdest zooplankton I have seen. We caught several of these during a recent research cruise off Australia on board the RV Kilo Moana (March 2007). The amphipod (the crustacean or shrimp-like animal) parasitizes an appendicularian (salp), and then eats the salp's body, leaving only the outside gelatinous house. The Phronima amphipod then lives in the house at depths of around 500 - 2000 m in the ocean, where it is a voracious predator. This bug was the inspiration for the Alien in the film series of the same name. For more information, please see:

Amphipod Eating Clam Mantle - We've finally managed to get a decent video clip of an amphipod feeding on the mantle tissue of a Tridacna derasa clam. The pod can be seen feasting on the clam for more than a minute, and you may even notice the pod's digestive tract filing with tissue from the clam.

Amphipods Up Close In HD! We've done it again, now we're bringing you amazing high-def MICROSCOPIC video of LIVE Amphipods. See them up close and personal in HD! I'm a new employee at Precision Aquaculture Tech. My job is to make sure all the copepod breeding tanks have enough food. I took this video during a routine water change here at Precision office aquariums. I noticed thousands of these guys in the refugium which is connected to all our display tanks. Sweet, I grabbed the HD camera and took these amazing shots! We breed these separately from the copepods, rotifers, phytoplankton, coral, fish and a whole bunch of other things too so I didn't even know we made these! Learn more at

Boyu TL450 01 My Boyu TL450 Nano Tank is 1 month and 1 week into its cycle. Not incredibly exciting just yet but i'm planning on doing a chronicle on the growth of the tank so we need to start at teh beginning. Right now i've only really focused on the live aspects of the tank. Currently the algae is Caulerpa, that little anenome is aiptasia (I know its a pest but its staying for now) and my colony of amphipods that is steadily multiplying at a rapid rate :) I plan to put the Clean Up Crew in next week so hopefully from then the "chronicles" will become a tad more exciting :)

Observing Scuds on Taneycomo, Nov 22, '09 This is a pool of water at the base of the rock bank at the Narrows. It where Fall Creek did the retainer wall work last year about 3/4 mile above Fall Creek. They are drawing the water down to work on Powersite Dam, the dam at the lower end of Taney. It left these pools of water. Bugs, including freshwater shrimp, follow the water down and congregate in these pools and along the edge of the lake as it drops. In the video, something I didn't see were the tiny bugs swimming around. They were too tiny to my eye but not the video camera. Cool.

Little Water Critters This is a miniature freshwater aquarium that I set up with Amphipods, Isopods and some small water insects. Amphipods and Isopods are crustaceans. While there have been many videos made of Sea Monkeys(ie brine shrimp) Amphipods seem to be much less known. Though in my opinion they can still be pretty interesting to observe. For all my videos, visit my website:

Amphipod Hunting Adult amphipod hunting on tank glass and macro algae. Fascinating marine creatures make a great addition to any marine aquarium. 3-10mm long and very agile. Amphipods are fun to watch and fun to feed. Salt water, heater, food, 2 gallon+ aquarium and a simple filter is all you need to watch these guys go. We make aquaculture easy for anyone.

The Blair Beach project A California beach comes alive at night. Beach-hoppers (Megalorchestia spp.) are small crustaceans that emerge from their burrows in the sand near the high tide line in the evening in search of fresh stranded kelp to eat. A healthy population of amphipods like this can eat much of the kelp that lands on the beach. Their escape hopping behavior is easy to observe when they are disturbed. These animals have highly developed orientation behaviors but the hop response to a small disturbance results in what appears to be random body position and direction (see slow motion).

Amphipods Playing! My amphipods playing around... what do you think they are doing? Sometimes it looks like they are fighting, I think it's like lion cubs "practicing" fighting! And those two adults, head-to-head confrontion, what's that about? Enquiring minds want to know... lol!

Planted Refugium with Amphipods and Copepods Featured is our best selling refugium planted with caulerpa prolifera (or "blade grass"), 4 pounds of our live sand. After adding our live amphipods and/or copepods the refugium serves as a nursery for new pods to grow without predators. As new pods populate the refugium naturally, they spill out of the refugium and into the main reef tank. The result is a well feed aquarium full of bio-diversity. "Feed your fuge, Feed your Reef" -
