New Information on the Safety of Albumin for Critically Ill Sept. 2005 - Back in 1998, FDA cautioned practitioners about the possible hazard of administering albumin to critically ill patients. The FDA notification cited a meta-***ysis which found that critically ill patients who received albumin had an increased risk of dying compared with those who received normal saline. FDA has now updated that information based on a large, randomized controlled trial. This new study found that for ICU patients who require fluid resuscitation, those who receive albumin do not experience a higher mortality rate than those who receive saline. In view of these results, FDA's Blood Products Advisory Committee decided that the new study has largely resolved the earlier safety concerns about giving albumin to critically ill patients. But several questions remain unanswered. For example, the relative safety of albumin in burn patients is still unknown, since these patients were excluded from the study. And the study indicated that patients with traumatic brain injury who receive albumin may experience an increased mortality rate.

First Douglas makes a 10% salt brine to `salt out' the water soluble proteins (albumin) on the surface of the salmon. Then he removes the skin and pin bones from the salmon and slices it into four pieces. One of these, hormone sensitive triacylglycerol lipase, is the only regulated enzyme of fat or fatty acid breakdown. It is located in fat-storing cells called adipocytes. 2. Triacylglycerol lipase action cleaves the first fatty acid off of a fat and this step is necessary before the other lipase can act to remove the other fatty acids from a fat. 3. Glycerol, is the only part of a fat that can be made into glucose (via gluconeogenesis). Fatty acids travel in the bloodstream carried by serum albumin. 4. Fatty acid oxidation occurs in the matrix of the mitochondrion. In the cell, fatty acids are attached to CoA and then at the mitochondrion, the CoA is replaced by carnitine. Inside the mitochondrial matrix, the carnitine is replace by CoA again. 5. Steps in fatty acid oxidation include dehydrogenation, hydration, oxidation, and thiolytic cleavage.
