  • VT-9 Birdstrike with Pilot Summary (T-45 Goshawk) The aircraft is a T-45 Goshawk trainer. Once again this is a fine example of if life gives you lemons; you make lemonade. I think this shows that the military often studies its mishaps and often makes them public so that everyone can benefit by learning from the mistakes, thusly prevent additional mishaps. Often tragedies are learning experiences. Like they say, the road to success is often paved with failures. Demonstrates superb airmanship. It's not just that "in the air piloting" ("stick and rudder") skills that are necessary to be a good pilot; in order to be a good pilot (and crew) one should be honest open and able to give honest evaluations and self-criticism. I think they did an excellent job getting the aircraft back on the ground safely, however they knit picked and ***yzed the mishap so next time hopefully it can be handled even better. Note and warning to pilots. Turning back to an airfield the after a loss of power is extremely dangerous. It is often referred as going for the "sucker field". Quite often the best option is to make a controlled crash without doing any extreme banking in the flattest remote field that you can. Unlike civilian aircraft this aircraft had ejection seats, that could have allowed the pilots to bail out if they didn't have enough energy to return to the runway. Also the engine still was producing a fair amount of power, and they had a fair amount of speed and altitude; which allowed them to return to the field. The Martin Baker Mk 14 ...

  • Paraglider Full Frontal Collapse The following events took place on Thursday 14th April 2011 in Morocco at Legzira Bowl, which is located about 2 hours' drive south of Agadir. Legzira is a popular site with paraglider pilots offering majestic views from the take off area situated around 300 metres above sea level. Legzira Bowl is a lower hill which is useful when conditions at Legzira are unsuitable. The pilot is a local area resident who was testing a wing belonging to a visiting pilot. The wind had recently picked up but was not unduly strong. Upon launch the glider climbed rapidly but after a few moments the wing experienced a full frontal collapse. This is dangerous when it happens so near to the ground. The glider spun 180 degrees & surged towards the ground - the pilot recovered control narrowly avoiding a high speed ground impact. The glider then settled over a farm house, now heading towards power lines. The pilot turned left, missed the house & landed unscathed. Skilled airmanship under extreme circumstances ensured that we could all enjoy the evening together, thankful that no injuries were sustained. The collapse was probably caused by a thermal air mass. The speed at which this incident unfolded is chilling.

  • Landing with One Wing - Miraculous Escape & Outstanding Airmanship an aerobatics aircraft survives the loss of one of its wings. An example of outstanding airmanship and 'Falling with style' by the pilot. Most pilots would not be able to react fast enough to survive such an unusual event. The engine power of the aircraft involved was an important factor in that it it was capable of enough thrust to offset much of the downward force of gravity as long as the pilot had the skill (in this case) to counter the spin caused by the loss of one of his wings.
