  • Dr. Henry Meredith accepts Teaching Award Of nearly 50 nominees out of a faculty of well over 1000 teachers on campus, Dr. Henry Meredith, Professor of Brass Pedagogy, Instrumental Music Education, and Music History at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, University of Western Ontario, was selected, through an arduous process, as one of only four recipients of the University Students Council Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching for the academic year 2010-2011. On this video clip, student representatives describe the award, and introduce "Dr. Hank" as the last of the professors to be presented with a plaque and special recognition. Professor Meredith then makes his acceptance remarks in his typically "off-the-wall" and humorous style, congratulating his fellow recipients, and summarizing what it means to be a good teacher. He rhymes a Top Ten list of "Things he has learned about teaching from his dog, Nema" which emphasize the importance of the interaction, in so many ways, between teacher and student, and he ends by saying "Thank You" in over thirty languages, ending with "Baie Dankie" (South African). This ties in with his opening impromptu fanfare on the vuvuzela, demonstrating that the cheap, plastic, lip-vibrated aerophone can produce more than one note, can play softly, and is more effective when silence ("rests") are inserted now and then. Soccer fans take note(s). The awards ceremony was held in London Hall on the UWO campus, Friday afternoon, March 25, 2011.

  • Sea Organ of Zadar - at Night Sea Organ - musical instrument played by the sea (excerpted from ) The musical Sea Organ (morske orgulje) is located on the shores of Zadar, Croatia, and is the worlds first musical pipe organs that is played by the sea. Simple and elegant steps, carved in white stone, were built on the quayside. Underneath, there are 35 musically tuned tubes with whistle openings on the sidewalk. The movement of the sea pushes air through, and depending on the size and velocity of the wave musical chords are played. The waves create random harmonic sounds. This masterpiece of acoustics and architecture was created by expert Dalmatian stone carvers and architect Nikola Basic in 2005, who recently received the European Prize for Urban Public Space for this project. Many tourists come to listen to this unique aerophone, and enjoy unforgettable sunsets with a view of nearby islands. Famed director Alfred Hitch*** said that the most beautiful sunset in the world can be seen from precisely this spot on the Zadar quay. That was how he described it after his visit to Zadar, a visit he remembered throughout his life by the meeting of the sinking sun and the sea.

  • Clay flute Music -Aztec, Maya Native American- Spectral sonorous ***ysis of experimental models. The execution of experimental organology exercises are not known in the traditional Archeology, because the ***ysis using physical replicas and mathematical models are not used, which are used in the design and evaluation process of engineering and scientific investigations. Neither has been of interest to explore the ancient acoustical attributes, because not a single aerophone rescued and stored in national museums has ever been to travel to a good laboratory with metrology equipment nor to other places where they could be played in the past to ***yze their sonorous properties in controlled situation or in ancient spaces and contexts. The author's experimental models have done so, at times finding administration difficulties, because guards say that "it is not permitted to play musical instruments in the archaeological sites". It occurred to some administrators of the ancient national patrimony to reinstall this prohibition initially imposed during the conquest and colonization by others who also depreciate the Mexican sonorous artifacts and their sounds. As it has not been possible to have access to the sonorous artifacts in museums and collections the ***ysis can only be done using experimental models. With experimental models it has been proved that the basic operation of these aerophones is very simple, because they have an air duct, but they can produce complex sounds if the input air flow is complex. The accordion is played by compression and expansion of a bellows, which generates air flow across reeds; a keyboard controls which reeds receive air flow and therefore the tones produced. Modern accordions consist of a body in two parts, each generally rectangular in shape, separated by a bellows. On each part of the body is a keyboard containing buttons, levers or piano-style keys. When pressed, the buttons travel in a direction perpendicular to the motion of the bellows (towards the performer). Most, but not all modern accordions also have buttons capable of producing entire chords. Tune in tomorrow!!!
