  • Aeronautics - GTI GTI -- FLIGHT CLASS ver. 2 June 2011 Elyse Hobbs is about to do something very few high school students have attempted. (Nat sound) She's flying a single engine Cesna on approach to Salt Lake International Airport. (Nat sound) In this aircraft simulator, you can still see the white knuckles on the controls, but, with coaching, Elyse makes a successful landing. Unlike real-world flight, Granite Technical Institute instructors are in control of everything. When Easton Dille's turn comes up, the flight simulator program gives him nearly impossible odds. 24:45 (Oh, oh, oh beep. Crash) And that's the advantage of the Granite Technical Institute's aeronautics class. You can walk away from a bad situation, and learn from it. 24:57 Next time we see that, add a little bit of extra speed, and maybe not use so much flaps, and we'll be just fine in that wind. 31:10 Carl Readicker "We have the classroom environment where we can learn a concept, and we can take that concept over into the flight simulator and simulate that experience, to where the student has a complete understanding and a hands-on education as to why a concept works, or it may not work." The science of flight begins on the ground, and what these aeronautics students learn is more of mathematics and physics than take offs and landings. 1:01 (Instructor) "Put down 42-Uniform, put down the altimeter setting, 2-niner, niner-1, and the tempurature is 33 degrees-C." (:10) While many of these Granite Technical Institute ...

  • Aero-TV Visits With The Academy Of Model Aeronautics Don't Call Them Toys! Like many flyers, ANN's Jim Campbell got his start in aviation via model airplanes... and that included an early membership in the first aviation organization he'd ever joined -- the Academy Of Model Aeronautics. So, it seemed natural that soomer or later he'd get a chance to "return to his roots" and see what the model aviation world was up to these days... and that story has to revolve, primarily, around the AMA. The Academy of Model Aeronautics tells ANN that are the world's largest sport aviation organization, representing a membership of more than 150000+ from every walk of life, income level and age group. It is a 'self-supporting, non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote development of model aviation as a recognized sport and worthwhile recreation activity, an activity/organization open to anyone interested in model aviation. AMA is the official national body for model aviation in the United States. AMA sanctions more than a thousand model competitions throughout the country each year, and certifies official model flying records on a national and international level. AMA is the organizer of the annual National Aeromodeling Championships, the world's largest model airplane competition. • The EADS Will Not Protest $35 Billion Tanker Contract Awarded To Boeing The European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS) says it will not protest the aerial-refueling tanker contract awarded last week to arch-rival Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA). The controversial $35 billion contract was originally awarded to Boeing in 2003, before a corruption scandal involving Boeing employees and Pentagon staffers was revealed, and the contract agreement rescinded. The contract was then awarded to Northrop Grumman in partnership with EADS in 2008, before being rescinded again after Boeing protested that the process was flawed and unfair. Following that development, Northrop abandoned its bid for the contract, leaving EADS to bid, ultimately unsuccessfully, alone. Sean O'Keefe, chief executive of EADS North America said, "We put our best effort into this, In our view, the Department of Defense had altered its requirement from being a modernization to one that merely required the replacement of the existing KC-135 aircraft." In the end, Boeing was able to offer a tanker price below that of what EADS offered.
