After winning the 2007 World Aerobatic Championship in the female category for the 6th consecutive time, Svetlana Kapanina keeps on demonstrating she is the best female aerobatic pilot of all times. She has won a total of 38 gold medals in World Aerobatic Championships. The FAI (International Air Sports Federation), added to that impressive collection, by presenting her with the FAI medal for Best Pilot of the Century. In 1987 Svetlana graduated from medical school, speciality - pharmacist. The following year she started flying in Kurgan, by 1991 she was a member of the Russian Aerobatic Joint Crew and by 1995 she had graduated from Kaluga Pilots School. Although she believed she would never devote her life to flying, what started out as a hobby has turned into serious work as a professional aerobatic pilot. It didnt take her very long to join the world's elite aerobatic pilots. Perhaps her training as a gymnast and many hours on the trampoline has contributed to her success, without requiring so many flight hours. In 1991, she was Absolute Champion of Russia and in 1993 she won silver at the European Aerobatic Championships, her first international aerobatic contest. She was awarded the medal For Service to the Motherland in 1995 and Award of Honor in 2002.   • Evgeny Frolov Aerobatics Phrolov Eugeny is an outstanding Russian pilot, one of the test aviation experts, the bearer of the order of the Hero of the Soviet Union. In the seventies he started as a member of all-USSR team in light weight aircrafts acrobatic flying. In those days the Soviet Union used to be an enormous but united country, and the team was coached by Kasum Gussein Nazhmutdinov, the former military pilot,who was to become the coach of the National Russian Federation team later on. Among those he had given a start in life to are such remarkable persons as Svetlana Savitskaya, a cosmonaut, highly-skilled pilots Lubov Morokhova-Nemkova, Valentina Yaikova. Phrolov was one of the first pilots who managed to fulfil flight manoeuvres on jet plane. He piloted many types of the aircrafts by Sukhoy: SU-24, SU-25, SU-30, SU-35. He set up several world records on SU-27. It was on SU-37 that Eugeny fulfilled the transcontinental non-stop flight to South America. Phrolov took part in lots of international aircrafts ehibitions. Brave and courageous by nature, he devoted all his life to the sky. Russia pays high tribute to the services such people rendered to the country.
  • Air-to-Air Aerobatics with Josh Wilson In early August, I was given the opportunity to get some air-to-air video of Josh Wilson and his Yakovlev Yak-50. Josh is an F-16 pilot for the 177th Fighter Wing out of Atlantic City and when he's not flying the F-16, he's flying his Yak. The aircraft is amazing - when the conditions are just right, Josh can have the airplane off the ground in under 100 feet! In the video, you'll see Josh fly some aerobatic maneuvers as I try my best to film it from the ***pit of a Starduster SA-300, owned by Josh's good friend Barry Straga. I apologize in advance, as the video from the air will be all over the place, as the Starduster is an open ***pit biplane and coupled with the fact that I had the HC52 with me, things did not go the way I had hoped they would. Josh, on the other hand, saw about 95% of the video and liked what he saw, despite the conditions and the warnings I threw at him. As part of our preflight briefing, Josh stated he wanted to get some video that he's seen everywhere else except with his airplane, and we agreed to get that video. You'll see me get his ground start, follow him out to the taxiway, then the takeoff. Following the flyby, Barry and I jumped in the Stardancer for the air-to-air stuff while Josh held out over the airport waiting for us.
