Vaccine Mix-ups: Adacel (Tdap) and Daptacel (DTaP) The Institute for Safe Medication Practices recently reported on several mix-ups between two vaccines. The first is DAPTACEL, which is diphtheria and tet*** toxoids and acellular pertussis vaccine adsorbed (DTaP). The second is ADACEL, which is tet*** toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis vaccine adsorbed (Tdap). Daptacel is used in infants and children 6 weeks to 6 years old for active immunization. Adacel is used for active booster immunization in persons 11 to 64 years old and it is also the first vaccine approved as a pertussis booster for adults. The component antigens in Adacel and Daptacel are the same, so ISMP says this contributes to making them easy to confuse. In one clinic, 13 adults were mistakenly vaccinated with Daptacel. At another clinic, seven adults received Daptacel instead of Adacel. Fortunately, none of the patients appeared to have experienced any unusual vaccine reactions, despite the fact that the pediatric formulation contains greater amounts of both the detoxified pertussis toxin and the diphtheria toxoid. RTO's utilize ceramic media packed into vertical canisters as a high-efficiency heat exchanger. Oxidation is achieved as pollutants pass through the ceramic media, are mixed, and held at elevated temperatures in the combustion chamber. The basic design concept of thermal oxidization is to promote a chemical reaction of the air pollutant with oxygen at elevated temperatures. This reaction destroys the pollutant in the air stream by converting it to CO2, H2O and heat. The rate of reaction is controlled by three-(3) interdependent and critical factors; time, temperature and turbulence. The charcoal adsorbed and bonded to the oil to such a point that I could stick a pointy knife into the water with the "oil spill" on top, and still the oil would not rupture or break while the charcoal was in there. I believe this will cause the oil to slow down dramatically and furthermore, will help it stick readily to the hair which is being collected in order to suction up the oil. Pea and Broad Bean Risotto Firstly, do not be put off by the broad beans in this recipe! They are a really delicious vegetable if you know what to do with them. If you remove the grey, leathery outer skin there is a delicate, vibrant green treasure inside! Ingredients 50g butter 1 tblsp olive oil 2 cloves garlic, sliced, or chopped 250g risotto rice 1/2 litre vegetable stock, boiling 75ml white wine (optional) 100g Parmesan cheese, grated 150g frozen/fresh peas 100g frozen/fresh broad beans Method Cook the broad beans in boiling water for 2 minutes, drain and rinse under cold water. Gently nick the broad bean skin with your finger nail and squeeze out the bright green bean, discard the skins. Melt the butter in a large frying pan, add the olive oil and garlic and cook gently for 2-3 mins without colouring the garlic. Add the rice and continue to cook over a medium heat for 2 mins. Add the white wine to the pan and cook untill it has been adsorbed. Add the boiling stock a ladleful at a time, stirring continuously and only adding more stock when the previous stock has been absorbed. Continue adding stock over a medium heat untill you have added nearly all of the stock. This will take 10-15 mins. At this point stir the peas and broad beans into the rice, continue adding stock untill the rice is tender, and creamy. Stir in 2/3's of the Parmesan and serve.
