  • The Foundation of Climate Science The Foundation of Climate Science - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2010-05-06 - Even after months of personal attacks against climate scientists stemming from a manufactured scandal over stolen emails, the underlying science behind the need to stem the tide of heat-trapping emissions remains solid. To explain what we know about climate change, and why and how we know it, Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming hosted top-level American climate scientists at a congressional hearing on Thursday, May 6, 2010. The scientists addressed the claims of deniers head-on. Thursday's panel featured a member of the investigative panel convened by the University of East Anglia and led by Lord Ron Oxburgh to review the stolen emails from that school's Climactic Research Unit. The "Oxburgh Inquiry" exonerated the scientists who were attacked following the emails, saying they "saw no evidence of any deliberate scientific malpractice in any of the work." The hearing also included three scientists involved in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports, which have also been attacked by climate science deniers. The Republican witness on the panel was Lord Christopher Walter Monckton, 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley. WITNESSES: Dr. Lisa Graumlich, Director, School of Natural Resources and the Environment, University of Arizona, and member of the "Oxburgh Inquiry" panel; Dr. Chris Field ...

  • Israel targets Journalists: The Story of Imad Ghanem One of the leaders of demonstrations in Gaza calling for the release of the BBC reporter Alan Johnston was a Palestinian news cameraman, Imad Ghanem. On 5 July, he was shot by Israeli soldiers as he filmed them invading Gaza. A Reuters video shows bullets hitting his body as he lay on the ground. An ambulance trying to reach him was also attacked. The Israelis described him as a "legitimate target." The International Federation of Journalists called the shooting "a vicious and brutal example of deliberate targeting of a journalist." At the age of 21, he has had both legs amputated. Dr. David Halpin, a British trauma surgeon who works with Palestinian children, emailed the BBC's Middle East editor, Jeremy Bowen. "The BBC should report the alleged details about the shooting," he wrote. "It should honor Alan [Johnston] as a journalist by reporting the facts, uncomfortable as they might be to Israel." He received no reply. The atrocity was reported in two sentences on the BBC online. Along with 11 Palestinian civilians killed by the Israelis on the same day, Alan Johnston's now legless champion slipped into what George Orwell in Nine*** Eighty-Four called the memory hole. (It was Winston Smith's job at the Ministry of Truth to make disappear all facts embarrassing to Big Brother.) While Alan Johnston was being held, I was asked by the BBC World Service if I would say a few words of support for him. I readily agreed, and suggested I also mention the thousands of Palestinians ...

  • Spring Fancy (A Nelena Movie) Part 16 The sun had turned warm. The sense of expanding familiarity and burgeoning acquaintanceship spun an ethereal web about the handsome man in his ruffles and tux and the dazzling young woman at his side. Laughter came readily, and a certain amount of cavalier flirtation was inevitable. Selena found herself turning to glimpse his strong blunt fingers on the wheel with new interest, his jaw and mouth with new interest, his jaw and mouth with forbidden curiosity. "Isn't it odd that we've never met before?" Nick turned, studied her silently, then nonchalantly returned his gaze to the open field beyond the city offices and library on the outskirt of the suburb where it joined the corn and potato and gladiola fields at the edge of Hennepin Country. The procession had broken up now, and the Haynes was purring along on its own. "Yes, considering how long we've been friends with the bride and groom. I've known Kevin since we were in elementary school, but then he went to the U and I went to Vo-Tech." "And I've known Danielle since high school." Nicks eyes wandered back to selena and for a brief glittering second, then he looked away again. "Well, now that we've met, Selena Marie Gomez, there's nothing we can do about it, is there?" SELENA'S POV It was a startling question and raised a shiver of apprehension up my arms. Yet i could not be tempted to indulge in spring fancy regarding this man. END OF POV " I think it's time we headed for the reception. It'll be starting in-do you have ...

Along Aberdeen Line, a half-hour drive west of London in the municipality of Dutton/Dunwich, carved pumpkins and other Halloween fare decorate the neat homes dotted up and down the road. But in their midst are what's left of a real house of horrors, the long-time lair of Wayne Kellestine, the most notorious of six Bandidos motorcycle club members convicted yesterday of murdering eight of their brethren. It was at the Kellestine farm that the killings took place in April, 2006. One of the eight died in a gun battle, the trial heard. But all the others were held captive overnight in the huge barn adjoining the farmhouse before being taken out to their cars at intervals, forced inside and shot dead. Then their bodies were hauled a short way up Highway 401 to the nearby hamlet of Shedden, dumped and almost immediately discovered. From ...
