  • Hip Anatomy Rap just being losers for a class presentation. Lyrics: A hip a hip a hip is a ball and socket joint, Listen to our song we'll make our point. The femur bone is heavy and long, In the acetabulum sits its head, This capsule is dense & strong. The innominate is a three part bone, Ischium, ilium and pubis, They do not move alone. [I said a hip hop,the hippie the hippie to the hip hip hop, a you dont stop the rock it to the bang bang boogie say up jumped the boogie to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat] This joint has high surface congruency, Therefore less able to dislocate, It has high stability. A hip a hip a hip is a ball and socket joint, Listen to our song we'll make our point. Iliofemoral and pubofemoral are the ligaments anterior, Ischiofemoral is the capsule ligament posterior. The last ligament is the ligament of the femur head, Weak and intracapsular, It does not strengthen the hips I've read. • RE: Hip Replacements and Massage From: Hi, Massage Nerd - I am a massage student close to graduation. Last week in our student clinic we had a woman with 2 hip replacements. She had spent the previous weekend on a 20 hour road trip and felt tight in her hip as a result. Normally, joint play/mobilization would be indicated, but we weren't sure how the hip replacement might affect this technique! We ended up playing it safe and among other techniques performed an iliopsoas release for her, which seemed too help a little. So... mobs for artificial joints... Is it a caution? A contraindication? Would it be beneficial? I don't even know how a replacement femoral head is attached into the acetabulum... is it the same capsule & ligaments or is it all new? Do you have any experience in joint mobilization of artificial joints? Lots of questions to get some discussion going. :) Thanks! Erin

  • "Anatomy and Physiology", The Joints of the Body, The Hip The Hip is a very complex joint. It incorporates the pelvic gurtle, its' articulation is bound to the pelvis with a complex web of ligaments. The Hip is responsible for the free movement of each of the legs, in their full range of motion. The Femur bone, the large bone of the upper leg has a narrowed area just proximal to the acetabulum, or the "ball" of the hip joint. This area is especially vulnerable to fracture in general, and even more so, in people with osteoporosis. The muscles of the upper leg play a very important role in the control of the legs, and by maintaining strength in the leg muscles, helps to guard the hip joint from excessive stress, and damage.

The approach follows the internervous plane between the tensor muscle and the sartorious and rectus femoris muscles using a section of the approach described by Smith Petersen.1 No tendons or muscles are cut or detached. The joint capsule is split and left in place. The hip joint is not dislocated; we perform the osteotomy of the femoral neck in situ. To date we have performed several hundred MicroHip™ operations, and thus far we have never observed severe nerve lesions or fractures of the greater trochanter. Our surgical method is reproduceable for teaching and it suits most of the patients; however we recommend to start using MicroHip with average sized patients. Visit to find out more.

  • Original biological reconstruction of the hip in a 4-year-old girl We resected the proximal femur in a 4-year-old child who had Ewing's sarcoma. We reconstructed her hip by an autotransplant of the ipsilateral proximal fibula with its vascular supply, inserted inside a massive bone allograft, and fixed to the residual femur by a plate. Serial postoperative imaging showed the progressive hypertrophy of the transplanted fibula, whose head displayed impressive tridimensional growth inside the acetabulum. 4 years after surgery, hip motility is 100º in flexion, 10º in extension, and 30º in abduction, and the patient's limb is weight bearing. In young adults, acetabular fractures are due to high energy injuries, primarily motor vehicle accidents, fall from a height, motorcycle accidents, and pedestrians hit by cars. The majority of patients are evaluated for and have associated injuries that require initial evaluation of the multiple-trauma patient using ATLS protocols. • ASR Hip Resurfacing An extract from RTE's newsreel programme, 'Nationwide' addressing the subject of Hip Resurfacing surgery, and how it changed the life of a Kilkenny farmer. Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Tadhg O'Sullivan, is one of the design surgeons of the DePuy ASR Resurfacing implant, and has carried out over 500 resurfacing procedures. He explains how the patient's bone is conserved during the Hip Replacement surgery, and how the procedure, carried out at The Whitfield Clinic in Waterford, restores young and active patients, such as the Kilkenny farmer, to their former lifestyle. Total hip replacement (THR) is a well documented, safe and effective procedure for arthritis hip pain. In younger, more active patients, THR is still effective, but the higher demand these patients place on their prostheses, means that the prosthesis may wear out and need replacing earlier than usual. The treatment option of choice for these younger, active patients is Hip Resurfacing. Instead of the large amount of healthy bone removed during THR, only the surface of the femur and acetabulum are replaced. Resurfacing implants are less likely to wear out, and more likely to allow the patient to return to their active lifestyle. more information can be found at

  • Anteversion and inclination of an acetabulair cup This animation shows the difference between True and Planar anteversion. Only True anteversion gives a reliable picture of the actual placement of the cup with respect to the anatomy of the pelvis. It should be noted that none of the "freehand" instruments used today are capable of measuring rotations with respect to the anatomical planes of the pelvis. However, a newly invented and patented method (by In Novation BV, Erwin de Wekker) makes this possible. This method combines the precision of navigation cup placement with the cost-effectiveness, time and simplicity of standard cup positioning.
