Sherpas (which mean Easterners) come from the Eastern part of Tibet, five centuries ago. Other Sherpas moved to Sikkim and Darjeeling (India) and other parts of Nepal. There are about 30000 Sherpas total with 3000 in Khumbu. Sherpas lived for generations between 3000 and 4500m which make them physiologically adapted to high altitude. That, their good temperament and strong will make them the number one choice for porters in tough expeditions (Everest, Nanga Parbat, K2, Kanchenjunga). Nov 8: Namche Bazaar - Thame - NB (acclimatization) As part of the necessary acclimatization due to altitude change (Kathmandu is at 1300m and Lukla 2800m), the following day I went to Thame (3800m), then back to Namche (2h30 one way). Basic rule of trekking: slowly ascent, climb high, sleep low and don't climb more than 400m a day with a rest every 1000 vertical meters. I enjoyed the landscape and the fact I had no bag! Firstly it holds in a monastery the skull of the Yeti. I took a picture of it so check it out. Unfortunately, turns out the skull was a little bit of a hoax when Sir Hilary was granted his wish to take it back to England for studying and discovered it was sheep's skin sown together. Still an interesting idea... The second, is the Sir Hilary School which was the first school built for the Sherpa people by the famous man who first summit Mt Everest. The Sherpa are the local people of the Khumbu valley, a sacred valley which surrounds Mt Everest (known by the locals as Sagartmatha). Everything in this valley is sacred for them...animals, trees and the mountains so from this point it's better to stick to vegetarian food as any meat needs to be transported on the back of a Sherpa from further down the valley and it has a tendency of getting spoiled in the heat. The trek to Kumjun took us past a Japanese built hotel which looked more like a 50's Hollywood villa built by an actor or actress and really did not belong in such a beautiful mountain setting. I don't feel too bad with the increase in altitude - just a bit of earache and headache. However, through the night I wake several times - each time finding myself suddenly gasping huge lungfulls of air, as though I had somehow forgotten to breathe. (I think everyone else in the group reported similar feelings.) 5.45am - wipe the condensation off the bedroom window - and there is a fantastic view of the multiple summits of Kwangde (pronounced 'Kwang-day') - the huge rocky buttress across the valley to the south-west of Namche. I go outside to take some photos. It is quite cold. Behind me is Thamserku (pronounced 'tam-sur-koo'). Towering over Namche, Thamserku is now much closer than when we last saw it yesterday morning. The sun is still hidden behind Thamserku - and it casts a shadow of the sharply-serrated peak onto the sky above. Namche is set into a south-west facing bowl in the hillside, so to get a view of Everest (which is to the north) I know I have to climb up out of the bowl. It is a steep climb and immediately I can feel the effects of the altitude. After just a few steps I am struggling for breath - and have to continue at a really slow pace. Although ...

As there was a lot of guests at the hotel last night and many had already had their acclimitization day we waited until most were almost ready to leave before I had breakfast. The temperature had dropped overnight and it was cold. There was still a little snow on some of the rooftops but it had almost gone. We set off out of the village and hiked to the army barracks to see a view of Everest from there. There is a view point near by and as we walk through Namche Bazar an inquisitive yak pokes his head over the wall.His mate is busy eating.( You can tell a thoroughbred yak by its long hair ) These animals only live at the higher altituded and carry large loads.We passed the sub station as we walk which is how they have lights and TV reception in the area. Operation Overwatch 2009: More BDU / ACU acclimatization of our troops at Camp SLO On August 12, 2009, we observed ROTC marching on a field at Camp San Luis Obispo in what looked like dress uniforms (which we have no objection to whatsoever) & Army National Guardsmen performing a flag ceremony outside the front gates (on Highway 1) in their BDUs / ACUs in yet another example of acclimatization of our military & the public into thinking that the daily wear of combat uniforms in America -- a country with which our troops are not at war (yet) -- is good & normal behavior & which will make it that much easier for everyone to accept when the troops are asked to move against the American people ... Which is coming soon &, if the responses to our channel by young soldiers is any indication, our troops have already been trained to think of the American people as the enemy. We've also been observing (& you can see a little bit of this in the video) a great increase in tanks, trucks, flatbeds, personnel carriers, etc. being stored on Camp San Luis Obispo's grounds. Since our southern border (in California) is not under attack, since there is currently no civil war underway & since the American people are (supposedly) not the enemy of the US military, then one has to wonder: WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THIS HUGE BUILDUP OF MILITARY HARDWARE IN A SLEEPY LITTLE COLLEGE TOWN LIKE SAN LUIS OBISPO? ________________________________________ For the unbelievers, below are some links to research ... Viajesyvinedos's travel blog entry: "We arrived in Tibet after spending a few sloth-like days in Kathmandu, getting re-acquainted with fresh coffee, tandoori chicken pizza and a lovely Australian red wine. Apparently, we just missed a week long strike in Kathmandu which had brought the city to a halt. After getting to know the eight other people that would be joining us on our Tibet pilgrimage, we made a two hour drive to the border town of Kodari. After quickly clearing the Nepal departure formalities, our gear was taken off the bus and subsequently carried on the backs of some enthusiastic Nepalese that included young boys, older men and women. The following hours of Chinese customs clearance dragged, slowing our pace as we made our way into Tibet. Officials conducted a very thorough inspection of everyone's bags and packs, removing most contents and restuffing them in a haphazard manner, giving us a lesson in a quick re-pack (folding was never really necessary). Besides the lengthy time delay and some group members losing a few books, the process went relatively smoothly. After handmade noodle soup at a at a local family restaurant in Zhangmu, we carried on to the town of Nyalam while paperwork was still being completed by our Tibetan guide back at the border. Trekking in Nepal - Annapurna Circuit Trek Annapurna Circuit trek is probably one of world's most beautiful treks. It will take you through a wonderful variety of landscape and culture, from the subtropical lower Marsyangdi valley where Gurung and Thakali settlements dominate to the northern arid Buddhist areas. Along the Marsyangdi river, on easy trails and suspension bridges, through rice terraces and forests, you will slowly gain altitude and acclimatize well. After leaving Pisang one can get stunning extremely up-close views of snowy and glaciated high peaks including Annapurnas II, III and IV. This remote area lies in a rain shadow formed by the Annapurnas and the landscape supports little in the way of forest apart from pine, juniper and scrub rhododendron. Huge glacial moraines abound, etched deeply by wind erosion into fantastic pillars. The Thorong La Pass (5415 m) is one of the highlights of this trek. Moreover the religious sanctity of Muktinath and the mules and peculiar customs of Jomsom will leave you spell bound.

Everest - Beyond the Limit [S01E01] - Part 5 Everest - Beyond the Limit [S01E01] - Part 5 - Summit Dreams At three miles above sea level, the base of Mount Everest is already higher than any mountain in the Rockies. Since the human body needs to adjust slowly to rising altitude, it is a huge effort just to begin the climb. The expedition team makes seven overnight stops to get to Base Camp (BC) on the mountain's northern face and will take a full month to acclimatize their bodies before they attempt the summit. The air is thin and the climbers feel physically weak, but the camaraderie is strong. As the team moves to Advanced Base Camp (ABC) at 21000 feet to begin acclimatization climbs, they are shocked to discover how badly their minds and bodies cope. The air is so thin at ABC that helicopter evacuation is impossible. The expedition members begin climbs up to a ridge at 23000 feet called the North Col, scaling 1000-foot ice cliffs along the way. Heat Acclimatization Part II
South Pole ski race "Wettlauf zum Südpol" A ski race between Austria and Germany held December 2010, racing the last 320 km to South Pole was organized by World Extreme Races. The support crew included doctor, medics, film crew, Arctic Trucks drivers/mechanics, polar experts and scientist. Starting from Novo airfield the competitors walk 150km towards the pole to acclimatize to the cold and high altitude. Then they are picked up by an airplane that fly's them to approx. 87 degrees (320km from South Pole). The support crew uses Arctic Trucks vehicles that follow the skiers walk during the acclimatization and then drive almost 2000km to meet up with the competitors at the start line. Two newly developed 6x6 Hilux got used for the first time together with two 4x4 Hilux all using 44inch tires. The total drive back and forth including all the extra drive for filming was 5400km per vehicle. This ski race was filmed by German broadcaster ZDF and Austrian broadcaster ORDF. The German team is led by TV presenter Markus Lanz and ultra marathon runner and extreme sportsman Joey Kelly. They're joined by Claudia Beitsch -- a Bio-Scientist -- and Dennis Lehnert of the Air Force. Their Austrian opposition is led by legendary skier Hermann Maier and radio presenter Tom Walek. Making up the Austrian team are Sabrina Grillitsch -- Austria's only female mountain infantry soldier -- and Alexander Serdjukov, who is a Husky racer.
