Blattner The largest genus of the Hypericaceae, Hypericum (St. John's wort), comprises 472 species of worldwide distribution. To test monophyly of sections and to get a phylogenetic hypothesis for the genus we sequenced the ITS region (nrDNA internal transcribed spacers) of multiple accessions for 192 species (40% of the genus), representing 34 out of the 36 sections. Ten outgroup representatives were included, covering the three tribes of Hypericaceae. The obtained phylogeny indicates Hypericum to be split into two Mediterranean grades and three large clades with the New World, Asia-Africa, and the Holarctic-Mediterranean as centers of their distribution. Sister to the New World clade is the genus Triadenum, what makes Hypericum polyphyletic. The phylogenetic tree is largely congruent with the results of a cladistic ***ysis of morphological characters. Mediterranean taxa are separated by initial splits from the reminder of Hypericum and occur also as sister-groups to the Asia-African and Holarctic taxa, respectively. Thus, an origin and early diversification of the genus around the late Tethys Ocean seems likely instead of the formerly proposed African origin, and the colonization of the extant distribution area of Hypericum implies multiple intercontinental long-distance dispersals.

  • IRRI ships 35.5 million seeds to Svalbard Global Seed Vault After months of preparation by staff of the Genetic Resources Center (GRC) at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI; ), led by its head Dr. Ruaraidh Sackville Hamilton, a replicate set of the Global Rice Collection from 123 countries held by IRRI left on 21 January for the Svalbard Global Seed Vault or Doomsday Vault.   • US Army Recruits Immigrants, Rewards Them With Citizenship The US Army is stepping up efforts to recruit more skilled soldiers by offering immigrants a fast track to US citizenship if they enlist.The move comes as the Pentagon prepares to send several thousand more troops to Afghanistan and with the war in Iraq in its sixth year.
  • MEPS Process Will Be Renamed "VIPS". !WOW! **Overhauling the MEPS process** The toughest part of getting through MEPS right now is the wait time. It can be a long day for applicants, and it can take more than one visit to complete all the required tests and paperwork. However, improvements are in the works, and by 2014 most entrance processing will happen virtually, without the applicant visiting a station. This is referred to as the Virtual Interactive Processing System or VIPS. Elements of VIPS are already in place, including biometric scanning to enhance applicant security and speed the check-in process. Other changes planned for the future include: A certified physician near the applicant's hometown will perform the MEPS physical. Medical and personnel records will be digitized and automated. ASVAB testing may take place in schools or testing centers, or potentially on a secure website. VIPS stands for "Virtual Interactive Processing System." And this is a move by the Military Entrance Processing Command to take the MEPS process and move it into the future. We will be moving to a virtually interactive process, whereby one visit to the MEPS equals one session. Roughly 700000 applicants came to the MEPS, but over 1.1 million visits were required in order for them to result in an accession into the Military. The most challenging thing I find in my command of the MEPS is that it is a long day for the applicant, and by moving to the VIPS system, we hope to streamline that, save costs on sessions.
