Contains excerpts from Carl Sagan's audio-book: PALE BLUE DOT: A Vision of the Human Future in Space CHAPTER TWO: ABERRATIONS OF LIGHT [please excuse the typo in the video text title ... I'm only one guy here and things slip by me sometimes lol] About Carl Sagan: Carl Sagan was the David Duncan Professor of Astronomy and Space Sciences and Director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies at Cornell University. He played a leading role in the American space program since its inception. He was a consultant and advisor to NASA since the 1950s, briefed the Apollo astronauts before their flights to the Moon, and was an experimenter on the Mariner, Viking, Voyager, and Galileo expeditions to the planets. He helped solve the mysteries of the high temperature of Venus, the seasonal changes on Mars, and the reddish haze of Titan. For his work, Dr. Sagan received the NASA medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement and (twice) for Distinguished Public Service, as well as the NASA Apollo Achievement Award. Asteroid 2709 Sagan is named after him. He was also awarded the John F. Kennedy Astronautics Award of the American Astronautical Society, the Explorers Club 75th Anniversary Award, the Konstantin Tsiolkovsky Medal of the Soviet Cosmonauts Federation, and the Masursky Award of the American ...

Removing Chromatic Aberrations Before Merging to HDR in Photomatix or Photoshop NOTE: watch this guide in fullscreen mode, and choose HD 720p for greater clarity. This is a guide to removing chromatic aberrations before merging your photos to HDR. The HDR process tends to emphasize CAs, so it's a good idea to remove them before you put them through HDR processing.

Aberrations is about a young narcoleptic woman whose life has been overshadowed by the mysterious death of her mother. This coming-of-age drama explores how a family mystery influences the lives of those left in its silent wake. Aberrations was a book blogger top 10 for 2008. It was also recognized in PRINT Magazine's Regional Design Annual 2009 issue for outstanding cover art.

| Deke's Techniques #14: Fixing chromatic aberrations in Photoshop This week's technique from Deke is about using Photoshop to fix a common problem that occurs in photographs: transverse chromatic aberration, otherwise known by its far less daunting name, color fringing. This phenomenon— caused by light breaking up into its primary components— leaves outlines of aberrant color around the edges in your photograph. Have no fear, however, because despite its daunting name, transverse CA is easily fixed in Photoshop. In this week's free movie from Deke's Techniques, Deke not only illustrates how the phenomenon occurs, but shows you how to fix it, armed with the Lens Correction filter and a modicum of ***ytical ability.

Geometric Aberration Geometric Aberration Image distortion caused by shortcomings of an optical system is called aberration. Aberrations of optical systems are divided into physical and geometric. There are several types of geometric aberrations: spherical, coma, astigmatism and distortion. In spherical aberration the rays distant from the axis pass through the lens and intersect. The point where they intersect is closer to the lens than the point where the closer rays intersect. It depends on the curvature of surfaces and optical power of a lens. Therefore, the use of optical glasses with high refractive index can reduce the spherical aberration. The next type of aberration is coma, which occurs when the rays make a small angle with the axis. The difference in focal lengths for beam rays passing through different zones of the lens causes different lateral magnification. As a result, the image of a point resembles a comet with a tail because the images formed by the peripheral zones of the lens shift away from the focus images. That is why this kind of aberration is called so. Another type of aberrations is astigmatism. Rays coming from a point fall onto the lens in different planes and pass through the axis of the system, thus forming images at different distances from the center of the lens. The image of the point looks like either a horizontal or a vertical segment, or an elliptical spot depending on the distance to the lens. When the rays sent to the system by an object make large angles ...

PhotoTechEDU Day 22: Measuring, Interpreting and... Google Tech Talks June 20, 2007 ABSTRACT Every lens has flaws. The eye—arguably the most important lens—has more than it's share. This talk is about recent technology that lets physicians measure and understand these wavefront aberrations. Some of these aberrations degrade our vision, while others seem to enhance it. Finally, I'll talk about efforts and technology to correct those aberrations. # useful properties of light and image formation # theory and techniques of photographic optics and image capture # theory of colorimetry and techniques of color reproduction # where and how photography is being used in Google products and projects # what tools exist inside Google for photographic...

Coma Aberration The contributions to coma aberration from different parts of the lens are shown. Students should be able to discern the reduction of the aberation if only the inner portions of the lens are used, ie if the lens were to be "stopped down".

Chromatic Aberration Chromatic AberrationWhen a non-chromatic light beam of a point source passes through a lens it splits into several rays. Each of them has a certain wave length. Thus all rays when crossing the optical system will propagate in different ways. That means they do not intersect in one point, ie focus. Some rays deflect in a certain way, depending on the lens type. As a result the image seems to be blurred. Such deflections are called aberrations. Chromatic aberration is considered to be one of the most significant types of aberration. It is conditioned by dispersion of the lens material. Lens focal length is determined by its refractive index. So it is dependent on the wave of incident light. This results in every chromatic constituent of the white colour having its own focus in various points on the major axis. There are two types of chromatic aberration. In longitudinal aberration focuses from red to violet are distributed along the major axis. In lateral aberration magnification changes depending on the wave length, and coloured contours appear on the image. In order to get a good-quality image it is necessary for both monochromatic and chromatic aberrations to be small. There are various methods of reducing chromatic aberration. One of them is to use two adjoining thin lenses of different glass with dispersion of different types. The simplest example here is a photographic lens. It consists of two lenses - a crown glass collecting lens and a flint glass diverging lens ...

iPhone CMOS sensor aberrations Taking off from Ukaih after having flown up there for an Ostrich burger, I filmed engine startup with my jail-broken original iPhone using Cycorder and did a double-take at the screen during capture, but then caulked it up to a display speed problem with Cycorder. When these visual aberrations were evident in the captured files, I first thought paranormal activity. 23µs later, I started a search for a reasonable explanation and found it... CMOS sensors are by design unbuffered, and so are captured similarly to how a cathode ray tube used to present the picture: it scans horizontally, line-by-line. This causes a time skew between the first and last-captured pixels. When filming certain types of high-speed vibrations, this can cause very interesting visual artifacts due to the "beating" nature of the moving object and the slow one-pixel-at-a-time capture mechanism. One of the most interesting is a rotating propeller. This clip shows the engine startup of a small prop plane. Initially it appears the blade is bending in a spiral out from the axis of rotation as it becomes orthogonal to the direction of the cameras sensor scanning direction. As the propeller becomes parallel to the horizontal sensor scanning plane, it remains in that position for such a short time, that once the propeller RPM reaches the threshold of the CMOS scanning speed, it is not in that position long enough for the sensor to finish even one scan line. At that point, the propeller mysteriously disappears ...

Tilia Stem and Aberrations All images captured with a Celestron Deluxe LCD Microscope. The videos come out of the microscope via a USB cable as .3gp files. If you know how to play these in Windows Vista 32-bit (or convert them to AVI) let me know! My searches on Google have been frustrating and fruitless. This is my first video taken with the microscope. The specimen is a Tilia stem. It came as a prepared slide with the microscope. This video was shot at 40x (4x objective * 10x sensor). Except for the surprise ending... Spoiler Alert! (that was 40x * 1.3x digital zoom... it can digitally zoom up to 4x)
