Lord Conyers Morris Men Abbots Bromley Horn Dance Lord Conyers Morris men ABBOTS BROMLEY HORN DANCE Winter Solstice 1996 The Abbots Bromley Horn Dance was first performed by Lord Conyers Morris Men in December 1978 and has since become a twice-yearly event in their very busy calendar. Traditionally, the dance is performed at dusk on the last Saturday before Christmas and again on May Eve. The event takes place in woodland close to the site of Robin Hoods Trysting Tree at Todwick in South Yorkshire. This unique setting, the eerie music and the time of day, all combine to make a very mystical performance. Normally led by the reigning Squire, the dance has always been performed to a haunting tune played on a solo fiddle. In the winter of 1996-97, however, the musician, Andrew Ash, was elected Squire, thus leaving the dance with no music. Alternative suggestions were put forward and for the first time in 18 years the music was played on English concertina. Ironically, Andrew was taken ill on the day and missed the performance altogether. With John Ledbury ably stepping in at the eleventh hour to take the lead, the day was saved and the dance took place as normal. This video is a record of that performance. CAMERAMAN: PAUL MEAKIN Notes by Mike Nield Note: This video was first recorded on a hand held VHS camcorder and later copied from the original tape to a second VHS tape for the benefit of the musician. It has since been transferred from VHS to DVD and a further copy converted to mpeg format. There may have been a slight ...

Theology on tap at Bad Abbots in Quincy QUINCY -- You've sampled the Sam Adams and guzzled a Guinness, but have you gone to the pub to listen to the cardinal? Bad Abbots, an Irish pub in Quincy, will be offering its regulars something a little more high-minded than trivia this week. Cardinal Sean O'Malley, archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, will be at the bar Wednesday night as part of a series of religious discussions called, appropriately, Theology on Tap. The goal of the "six-pack," as the six sessions at the Quincy bar are being called, is to engage people outside of a church, including those who might just happen by the pub to watch a Red Sox game, said the Rev. Michael Drea of St. Ann's Church in Wollaston. The Rev. Drea, the force behind the Theology on Tap program at Bad Abbots, is trying to reach out to a crowd you might not see at a Sunday Mass. "It's not just for those in the pews on Sunday who come down and bring their friends," the Rev. Drea said. "It's for those who might not be expecting it. I might have one ear to this while I have one eye on the ball game. Maybe something might be of interest, something might click." "The last place you'd expect to see a Catholic priest stand up is at a bar, at Bad Abbots in Quincy," the Rev. Drea said. "It's kind of counter-cultural. But when you think about it, Jesus himself was counter-cultural." Peter Kerr, owner of Bad Abbots, said he was immediately open to the idea of holding the sessions at his bar when he was approached by the Rev. Drea ...

Mike Abbot Reveals himself to be the Stealer of Stuff The *** has the gall to taunt Bruce, saying that he will die with his beloved stuff! An epic battle ensues, but Bruce's reality is slowly starting to crumble away as *** shotas, poorly animated Warriors, and his ninja cohorts slowly melt into the background of an ever-growing swirl of chaos. Even Nabakov, who died in the previous installment, seems to be, due to a quantum flux of epic proportions, still making his presence felt. As players come and go, this faux tableaux becomes ever stranger and more dangerous all whilst Mike Abbot fights Bruce to the death with his own ninja strength. The road is long and hard, and there is no guarantee of survival at the end of it, folks. In this ephemeral evanescent ecstasy-fused endurance match, not even all of Mike Abbot's gunmanship skills can save him from some deft swordplay by an alter ego of Bruce. All those Skill Points for nothing! However, as the dust settles, and the battle is won, Bruce realizes something important. He still doesn't have his stuff! Where could it be? Who has it? Can Bruce get it back? What about Mike? Is he really dead? Is this really THE END? Find out all of this and more in Round 6 vs. me, courtesy of Moogle, aka ffgasm! Round 5 of Week 12

The Abbots Bromley Horn Dance The official records of the dance go back to at least the time of Henry the Third, who in 1226 granted that the dance be performed to the Abbots of Burton at the Barthelmy Fair celebrating St Bartholomew's Day August 24th. Although this shows the dance has been performed for over 800 years, carbon dating on the horns used in the dance shows that they are actually over a thousand years old! This means that the dance was most likely a very ancient tradition going far further back than 1226, and, given its strong symbolism and time of the year, could well be a very ancient, possibly even Paleolithic or Neolithic ceremony to celebrate the start of the hunting season in that area. In any event, it is certainly the oldest traditional dance in all of Britain, and possibly the oldest tradition in the country, being performed faithfully each year for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
