Duke Ellington - Abaca String Band Billy Strayhorn was inspired to write "Take the 'A' Train" when Duke Ellington wrote directions for him to get to his house by subway, directions that began, "Take The A Train." Written in 1939, it became the signature tune for the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1940. Following it are two Ellington standards, "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", originally written as the instrumental, "Never No Lament", in 1940 with lyrics and a new title added in 1942, and that tune with the inimitable title, "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)", from 1931. The Abaca String Band was founded in 1991 by Andrew Schulman. The members of the group are Schulman, Music Director/8-String Guitar, Robert Zubrycki/Violin, Tamara Volskaya/Domra-Mandolin, Julie Goodale/Viola, Bradley Lovelace/Double Bass. Wushu by Teake in Fiji, Abaca Village Performing on the spot Wushu at the ceremonial Meke in the Village of Abaca in Fiji. Hadn't brought weapons, so we stripped down a piece of nearby bamboo. And let 'er rip! The Meke was held mostly for the benefit and entertainment of a band of about 30 or so middle-aged, German tourists. Abaca has been designated a national park and major eco-tourism site. One over-eager German tourist towered over me as I sat cross-legged, plastic pick in hair, ripping excess branches off the bamboo pole in preparation for the ceremonial performance. As he snapped candid's, I imagine he counted himself lucky for catching a real-live native in the traditional act of preparing for a time-honored authentic communal practice. Really he got this: a displaced urban American boy scraping leaves off a stick to use in a demonstration of contemporary Chinese performance martial arts for a pack of displaced eco-tourists. *Gotta love the global village, transparency, and the continual exchange of information, bodies of knowledge, and physical bodies too! Props to Samoan Language Teacher Silao for whipping out his guitar last minute to provide the backdrop mood music! ***
